Η καθημερινότητα των κατοίκων της Άσσιας, όπως και των χωριών της υπόλοιπης Κύπρου, περιλάμβανε παραδοσιακές ασχολίες είτε στο σπίτι είτε στα χωράφια του Μεσαρίτικου κάμπου. Όσον αφορά την κυπριακή οικία, αυτή αποτελούνταν από εσωτερική αυλή, η οποία συχνά περιλάμβανε πηγάδι για να εξυπηρετεί τις ανάγκες της οικογένειας αλλά και παραδοσιακό ξυλόφουρνο για το ψήσιμο αρτοποιημάτων και φαγητών. Επιπρόσθετα, η ζωή των χωρικών, ως αγροτική, επικεντρωνόταν γύρω από διάφορες γεωργικές και κτηνοτροφικές ασχολίες όπως το όργωμα της γης με ξύλινο άροτρο, τον θερισμό με το δρεπάνι, το αλώνισμα, το λίχνισμα και την εκτροφή προβάτων και αιγών.
People living in Assia village, and any other village in Cyprus during the early-mid 20th century, were involved in traditional activities either within the house or in the fields of Mesaoria plain. The authentic Cypriot house included an internal courtyard with a well and/or a wood stove. Additionally, villagers' life focused on farming and stock-farming activities such as the cultivation of arable lands by using the wooden plough and two cows, harvesting with a billhook, threshing, winnowing and stock-breeding practices.

Ο Μιχαήλ Κκάσιαλος γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στο χωριό Άσσια της επαρχίας Αμμοχώστου. Στο σχολείο απέκτησε τις πρώτες ζωγραφικές του εμπειρίες με δάσκαλο τον Κυριάκο Πιερίδη. Από τότε διαφάνηκε το πηγαίο του ταλέντο και η αγάπη του για τη ζωγραφική, στην οποία στράφηκε αποκλειστικά από το 1957. Ένα νέο και σημαντικό κεφάλαιο ανοίγει, έτσι, για τον ζωγράφο και τη ναΐφ τέχνη του νησιού. Το 1960 οργανώνει την πρώτη του ατομική έκθεση, η οποία του ανοίγει το δρόμο και για άλλες, τόσο στην Κύπρο όσο και στο εξωτερικό. Συμμετέχει επίσης και σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις. Το έργο του αποσπά ευνοϊκές κριτικές και ο Τύπος επαινεί την τέχνη του. Σταθμός η έκθεσή του στο Ινστιτούτο της Κοινοπολιτείας στο Λονδίνο, η οποία απέσπασε κολακευτικά σχόλια από τον αγγλικό Τύπο. Επίσης, η συμμετοχή του στη 2η Τριενάλε Ναΐφ Τέχνης της Μπρατισλάβα, όπου και βραβεύτηκε μ' ένα από τα σημαντικότερα βραβεία, γεγονός το οποίο του πρόσφερε διεθνή αναγνώριση. Παρ' όλη όμως την επιτυχία και αναγνώριση εντός και εκτός των κυπριακών συνόρων, ο Μιχαήλ Κκάσιαλος δεν έχασε την αυθεντικότητα και δεν νόθευσε κανένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά του γνήσιου Κύπριου αγρότη. Δεν αποχωρίστηκε ποτέ την παραδοσιακή βράκα, την πλατιά ζώστρα και το χαρακτηριστικό καλπάκι του που τον κατέστησαν αυθεντική φυσιογνωμία του κυπριακού κάμπου, δεμένο με τις ρίζες, τα ήθη και τα έθιμα του τόπου, τα οποία με τόση μαεστρία και αμεσότητα απεικόνιζε στο ζωγραφικό του έργο. Ο Μιχαήλ Κκάσιαλος κατάφερε να δώσει μέσα από τα έργα του μια Κύπρο ανόθευτη, ένα κόσμο ειδωμένο μέσα από τα μάτια της ψυχής του, εγκλωβίζοντάς τον στο τελάρο του όπου θα παραμένει για πάντα, ανεπηρέαστος από τις αλλαγές που γνωρίζει καθημερινά ο κόσμος που γνώρισε. Η θεματογραφία του είναι ολοκληρωτικά εμπνευσμένη από την καθημερινότητα όπως ο ίδιος τη βίωσε. Ζωγραφίζει τα ήθη και τα έθιμα του τόπου, ιδιαίτερα αυτά που συνδέονται με τον κύκλο της ζωής αφού το θέμα τον απασχόλησε πολλές φορές. Το στόλισμα της νύφης, ο χορός και το ράψιμο του κρεβατιού, το γλέντι του γάμου, το μυστήριο στην Εκκλησία, όπου όλο το χωριό δίνει το «παρών» του και φαίνεται να χαίρεται με το ζευγάρι χορεύοντας και τραγουδώντας με τη συνοδεία των παραδοσιακών οργανοπαικτών, τα έθιμα της Δευτέρας του γάμου και η παρθενιά της νύφης ήταν μερικά από τα θέματα που κόσμησαν τα έργα του.
Michael Kashalos was born in 1885 in Assia village in Famagusta district and lived there his entire life. He first tried his hand on painting while at school with his teacher, Kyriakos Pierides. His innate talent became apparent and so did his love of painting. His attraction to creativity then led him to regularly attend the icon painting of the village church by fathers Kyrillos and Nyphon. At the age of thirteen, following his father's advice, he learned the craft of shoe-making, and worked as a shoemaker for many years. But Kashalos never forgot his first love, artistic creation. Therefore he started decorating mirrors, painting beautifully on glass, manufacturing tasteful decorative and handy objects and pottery which he later sold in various fairs. It was then that he discovered his talent in sculpture and particularly his gift in making true copies of ancient finds. His great skill helped him make true replicas using primitive tools and materials, which he would then sell with great ease as antiquities to local and foreign visitors.
