The church was built in 1963-1966 in a traditional Byzantine style and is full of contemporary frescoes. The impressive fresco which decorates the dome depicts the “All Powerful” surrounded by the Archangels, the Prophets and saints. Ο Μητροπολιτικός Ναός της Ιεράς Μητροπόλεως Κωνσταντίας - Αμμοχώστου είναι αφιερωμένος στον Μεγαλομάρτυρα Άγιο Γεώργιο τον Τροπαιοφόρο, ο οποίος είναι ο πολιούχος Άγιος και προστάτης της πόλης του Παραλιμνίου. Πανηγυρίζει στις 23 Απριλίου, μνήμη του Αγίου και στις 3 Νοεμβρίου, του σπόρου, ανακομιδή των λειψάνων του Αγίου. Είναι κτισμένος ακριβώς δίπλα από την παλαιά εκκλησία του Αγίου Γεωργίου. Στο χώρο αυτό υπήρχε ένα πολύ μεγάλο περιβόλι με εσπεριδοειδή, γνωστό σε όλους ως το «περβόλιν τ΄ Άη Γιωρκού». Το μεγάλο περιβόλι σιγά-σιγά με τη δημιουργία δρόμων, καταστημάτων και οικοπέδων καταστράφηκε. Ένα μικρό μέρος του περιβολιού με πορτοκαλιές παρέμεινε και διαμορφώθηκε σε μικρό πάρκο και χώρος περιπάτου. Η πλατεία των εκκλησιών περιλαμβάνει τις εκκλησίες της Αγίας Άννας, του Αγίου Γεωργίου (παλαιά) και το Μητροπολιτικό ναό του Αγίου Γεωργίου. Κτίστηκε την περίοδο 1963 – 1966 με σχέδια του Αρχιτέκτονα Μιχάλη Α. Κόκκινου και εγκαινιάστηκε την 21η Σεπτεμβρίου, 1969 από τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Κύπρου κ.κ. Μακάριο Γ. Ο ναός είναι από τους μεγαλύτερους της περιοχής σε ρυθμό βυζαντινό, και σχήμα σταυροειδές με τρούλο. Το δάπεδο είναι κατασκευασμένο σε τρία διαφορετικά επίπεδα, ώστε να δίνεται η δυνατότητα σε όλους να παρακολουθούν τα μυστήρια. Έχει χωρητικότητα μέχρι 2000 άτομα. Λειτουργούν τρεις είσοδοι για την εξυπηρέτηση του εκκλησιάσματος, το οποίο αυξάνεται σταθερά καλύπτοντας όλες τις ηλικίες. Άρχισε να αγιογραφείται από το 1995, από την ομάδα του καθηγητή αγιογραφίας κ. Σώζο Γιαννούδη. Σήμερα είναι αγιογραφημένες όλες οι πλευρές του ναού με εξαιρετικές τοιχογραφίες: • Στο θόλο παρουσιάζεται ο Παντοκράτορας επιβλητικός να παρακολουθεί με άγρυπνο βλέμμα όλο το εκκλησίασμα. • Μεγάλη εικόνα του έφιππου και δρακοντοκτόνου Αγίου Γεωργίου καλύπτει τον τοίχο της βόρειας πλευράς. Στον απέναντι τοίχο της νότιας πλευράς υπάρχει ο Άγιος Δημήτριος. • Τα μαρτύρια του Αγίου Γεωργίου παρουσιάζονται σε ημικυκλική μορφή στο βόρειο τοίχο πάνω από την βόρεια είσοδο. • Το Άγιο Βήμα είναι πλήρως αγιογραφημένο με τη μορφή της Πλατυτέρας Παναγίας να αγκαλιάζει όλους τους πιστούς. • Στο νότιο τοίχο πάνω από την είσοδο παρουσιάζεται η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου. • Όλοι οι Άγιοι και πολλοί μάρτυρες του χριστιανισμού έχουν αγιογραφηθεί σε διάφορα σημεία. Στο Σολέα υπάρχει ο αρχιεπισκοπικός θρόνος, τα ψαλτήρια, στασίδια για επίσημους και ο άμβωνας. Το εικονοστάσι είναι ξυλόγλυπτο με διάφορες χριστιανικές διακοσμήσεις και συμβολισμούς. According to a marble inscription, it was erected in 1859 in the place of an older byzantine church, parts of which have been incorporated in this one. Part of its north wall is covered with a large fresco depicting St. George killing the dragon. Ο Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Γεωργίου διαδέχθηκε το 19ο αιώνα ένα παλαιότερο βυζαντινό ναό. Βρίσκεται στο κέντρο του Παραλιμνίου στο μέσο του βυζαντινού ναού της Παναγίας, γνωστού επίσης ως «της Αγίας Άννας» (13ος αιώνας), και του Μητροπολιτικού ναού του Αγίου Γεωργίου, που κτίστηκε το 1963 – 1966. Σε μαρμάρινη επιγραφή δίνεται η πληροφορία ότι ο σημερινός ναός «ανηγέρθη εκ βάθρων» το 1859, στη θέση παλαιοτέρου βυζαντινού ναού από τον οποίο διασώθηκαν τμήματα και ενσωματώθηκαν στο νεώτερο. Η επιγραφή βρέθηκε κατά την κατεδάφιση των αιθουσών του παλαιού σχολείου, δίπλα στην εκκλησία και ήταν σκαλισμένη πάνω σε πλάκα εντοιχισμένη στην εξωτερική παρειά του νότιου τοίχου στα αριστερά της νότιας εισόδου. Αυτά τα τμήματα είναι το κτιστό και τοιχογραφημένο μέρος της Αγίας Τράπεζας, το κάτω μέρος των τοίχων της αψίδας, καθώς και τα δύο τυφλά τόξα στο βόρειο τοίχο και κατά συνέπεια η ενδιάμεσή τους τοιχοδομία. Το μεγαλύτερο τόξο κοσμείται με την τοιχογραφία του Αγίου Γεωργίου και το μικρότερο πιθανόν να διασώζει επίσης τοιχογραφημένο διάκοσμο, σύμφωνα με κάποιες ενδείξεις από μικροδείγματα ανασκάψεων, που διενεργήθηκαν το 1991, κάτω από τα μεταγενέστερα κονιάματα και χρώματα. Παλαιότερα, περιβαλλόταν στη νότια πλευρά από χαμηλό τοίχο, εστεμμένο με μεταλλικό κιγκλίδωμα. Δίπλα του υπήρχε το παλιό σχολείο, που κατεδαφίστηκε τη δεκαετία του 1980. Στα βόρεια του ναού υπήρχε μεγάλο περβόλι, από το οποίο διασώζεται ακόμη και σήμερα ένα τμήμα με εσπεριδοειδή, στο βάθος, πέραν του Μητροπολιτικού Ναού του Αγίου Γεωργίου. Η ύπαρξη προγενέστερου ναού επιβεβαιώνεται από την προφορική παράδοση, καθώς και από την ιστορική και κριτική μελέτη της αρχιτεκτονικής και των επιγραφών που συνοδεύουν την τοιχογραφία του Αγίου Γεωργίου και των επιγραφών και του γραπτού διακόσμου της κτιστής βάσης της Αγίας Τράπεζας. Η κτιτορική επιγραφή του ναού περιλαμβάνει τις χρονολογίες 1856 και 1859 για την ανέγερσή του και σημειώνει ως έτος αποπεράτωσης το 1873. Όμως σε χειρόγραφο του 20ου αιώνα, που βρέθηκε στο ναό, αναφέρεται ότι ο ναός άρχισε το 1848 και υπήρξε αναστολή των εργασιών. Συνεχίστηκαν οι εργασίες το 1856, δηλαδή οκτώ έτη αργότερα. Στην παλαιότερη επιγραφή, που συνοδεύει την τοιχογραφία του Αγίου Γεωργίου δηλώνεται σαφώς ότι αυτή ανακαινίσθηκε το 1849. Άρα η τοιχογραφία αυτή στο τύμπανο του μεγάλου τυφλού τόξου, στο βόρειο τοίχο, είναι παλαιότερη του 1849 και ως εκ τούτου στον προγενέστερο ναό, του οποίου η κατεδάφιση πρέπει να έγινε το 1848, αφού η ανέγερσή του άρχισε, σύμφωνα με το προαναφερθέν χειρόγραφο, το 1848, αλλά ανεστάλη μέχρι το 1856. Διατηρήθηκε μαζί με το διπλανό της μικρότερο τυφλό τόξο και τα αντίστοιχα τμήματα τοίχων και ενσωματώθηκε στο ναό του 19ου αιώνα, που άρχισε να κτίζεται το 1856 και 1859 και αποπερατώθηκε το 1873. Εν τω μεταξύ, όμως, η τοιχογραφία είχε ήδη εκτεθεί στις καιρικές συνθήκες, μετά την κατεδάφιση του παλαιού ναού και της καθυστέρησης των εργασιών ανέγερσης του νεώτερου. Αυτή η έκθεση στις καιρικές συνθήκες, από το 1848 ανάγκασε προφανώς τον τότε Εκκλησιαστικό Επίτροπο Νικόλαο Προσκυνητή να αναθέσει σε ζωγράφο την ανακαίνισή της μετά από ένα έτος, ήτοι το 1849. Άλλη επιγραφή στην τοιχογραφία του Αγίου Γεωργίου μνημονεύει και δεύτερη ανακαίνισή της το 1866, δηλαδή επτά χρόνια πριν από την πλήρη αποπεράτωση του ναού το 1873. Στην επιγραφή αυτή αναφέρεται ότι η τοιχογραφία «ανεκαινίσθη» επί αρχιεπισκόπου Σωφρονίου και επί της Επιτροπής Αντωνίου( πρόκειται για το γνωστό Επίτροπο τον Αντώνιο Σκάρο, που αναφέρεται σε πλείστες επιγραφές του ναού συχνά μαζί με τον τότε ιερέα Οικονόμο Γεώργιο) το 1866 από το ζωγράφο Αντώνιο Χριστίδη. Οι δύο αυτές διαδοχικές ανακαινίσεις, που απέχουν δεκαεπτά έτη η μία από την άλλη, οφείλονται αναμφίβολα στο χρόνο, που συνέχιζε να υφίσταται η τοιχογραφία, αφού βρισκόταν συνεχώς εκτεθειμένη στις καιρικές συνθήκες λόγω της μη συμπλήρωσης της ανέγερσης του ναού, ο οποίος αποπερατώθη πλήρως το 1873, οπότε και ενσωματώθηκε σε αυτόν και προστατεύθηκε τελειωτικά η τοιχογραφία με τα προαναφερθέντα αντίστοιχα τμήματα των τοίχων. Η ΑΓΙΑ ΤΡΑΠΕΖΑ Το κάτω κτιστό τμήμα της Αγίας Τράπεζας ανάγεται στο 17ο αιώνα ή και παλαιότερα, διότι ο γραπτός διάκοσμος του αποδίδεται με βεβαιότητα στο ζωγράφο Παύλο, που ζωγράφισε το 17ο αιώνα το εικονοστάσιο της διπλανής εκκλησίας της Παναγίας (ή Αγίας Άννας). Ο γραπτός διάκοσμος των θωρακίων του εικονοστασίου είναι ο ίδιος με εκείνον που κοσμεί τις τρεις όψεις (δυτική, βόρεια και νότια) της βάσης της Αγίας Τράπεζας. Συνεπώς ο γραπτός διάκοσμος στο κάτω τμήμα της Αγίας Τράπεζας ανάγεται στο 17οαιώνα. Το άνω ξυλόγλυπτο χρυσοποίκιλτο κουβούκλιο της Αγίας Τράπεζας προστέθηκε το 1872. Οι ΤΟΙΧΟΓΡΑΦΙΕΣ Ο υφιστάμενος ναός ουδέποτε αγιογραφήθηκε πλήρως. Όλη η πολυσταυροθόλια καμάρα ήταν χρωματισμένη με κυανό ινδικό ανοιχτό χρώμα, διάσπαρτο πιθανόν με χρυσά αστέρια. Σήμερα έχει βαφεί από πάνω με ιδίου τόνου χρώμα, εκτός από τα σφενδόνια και τα ανάγλυφα χρυσά κοσμήματα στα κλειδιά τους. ΑΓΙΟΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Ο ΔΡΑΚΟΝΤΟΚΤΟΝΟΣ Η τοιχογραφία του Αγίου Γεωργίου Δρακοντοκτόνου γεμίζει όλο το τύμπανο του τυφλού τόξου στο βόρειο τοίχο. Ένα μεγάλο τμήμα του βόρειου τοίχου, από την αψίδα μέχρι και το μεγάλο τυφλό τόξο, με την τοιχογραφία διατηρήθηκε από τον προγενέστερο ναό. Το εσωράχιο του τόξου και το άνω μέρος των παραστάδων που το υποστηρίζουν, καλύπτονται από σκηνές του βιογραφικού και μαρτυριολογικού κύκλου του αγίου. Το εξωράχιο του τόξου διατρέχεται από δύο ανάγλυφους ανθεμωτούς βλαστούς χρωματισμένους με χρυσαλοιφή, που αναφύονται από δύο δοχεία και ενώνονται στην κορυφή. Ξεχωρίζουν οι τέσσερις κύριες φάσεις. Τρεις από αυτές συνοδεύονται με επιγραφές που περιέχουν τις χρονολογίες το 1849, 1866 και 1901. Η πρώτη αγιογράφηση της εικόνας χρονολογείτε πριν το 1849. Πρόκειται λοιπόν για ανακαίνιση κάποιας τοιχογραφίας ακαθόριστης χρονολογίας, πριν το 1849. Η αρχική τοιχογραφία με τις επεμβάσεις του 1849 και του 1866 επιζωγραφήθηκε πλήρως το 1901. Ο άγιος παρουσιάζεται έφιππος να εξοντώνει το δράκο. Το άλογο ανασηκώνει τα εμπρόσθια πόδια. Σε ακαθόριστο στάδιο, μετά το 1901, οι πατέρες της Μονής του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα προέβησαν σε επιδιορθώσεις επί της τοιχογραφίας του αγίου Γεωργίου, που συνίσταντο κυρίως σε κλεισίματα των κενών που δημιουργήθηκαν από διάφορες φθορές. ΤΟ ΕΙΚΟΝΟΣΤΑΣΙ Το εικονοστάσιο είναι ξυλόγλυπτο στο συνήθη ρυθμό, που επικρατεί στην Κύπρο τον 19Ο αιώνα και επιχρυσωμένο με φύλλα χρυσού. Περιλαμβάνει από το δάπεδο μέχρι την κορυφή πέντε επίπεδα, με συνολικό ύψος 7,60 μέτρα και πλάτος 9 μέτρα, όσο δηλαδή το συνολικό πλάτος του ναού. Όλο το εικονοστάσιο φιλοτεχνήθηκε το 1869 από τον ξυλογλύπτη Παρασκευά Αλαγιώτη επί επιτροπείας Αντωνίου Σκάρου. Εχρυσώθη δε δεκατέσσερα χρόνια αργότερα, το 1873, το ίδιο δηλαδή έτος που αποπερατώθηκε ο ίδιος ναός, όταν ιερέας της κοινότητας ήταν ο Οικονόμος Παπά Γεώργιος επί Αρχιεπισκόπου Κύπρου Σωφρονίου. Τον 20Ο αιώνα το ξυλόγλυπτο χρυσωμένο μέρος του εικονοστασίου δέχθηκε σε διάφορα στάδια ανακαινιστικές επεμβάσεις με χρυσαλοιφή. Κατά τα έτη 2003-2005 συντηρήθηκε ένα μέρος του εικονοστασίου και των εικόνων από τον κ. Σέργη Σεργίου και το υπόλοιπο από το Κέντρο Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς. Όλες οι εικόνες του εικονοστασίου ανάγονται στο 19Ο αιώνα. Προβληματισμό προκαλούν οι δύο Δεσποτικές εικόνες, του Παντοκράτορος με χρονολογία 1849 και της Θεοτόκου με χρονολογία 1866. Φαίνεται ότι η εικόνα του Παντοκράτορος προϋπήρχε στον παλαιότερο ναό. ΤΟ ΚΩΔΩΝΟΣΤΑΣΙΟ - καμπαναριό Το κωδωνοστάσιο είναι του 19ου αιώνα και κτίστηκε κάπως μεταγενέστερα από την ίδια την εκκλησία. Βρίσκεται στο σημείο ένωσης της αψίδας με το νότιο τοίχο. Στο χειρόγραφο του 20ου αιώνα, που διασώθηκε στο ναό, δίνεται η πληροφορία ότι είχε τρία επίπεδα, ύψους 12 ποδών το καθένα, και επιπλέον 10 πόδια το κουβούκλιο στην κορυφή. Επίσης ότι επηρεάστηκε από σεισμό το 1941 και κατά την επιδιόρθωση αφαιρέθη το ένα επίπεδο, και αναστηλώθηκε πιο χαμηλό κατά 12 ποδιά. Ο ΑΜΒΩΝΑΣ Βρίσκεται στο βόρειο τοίχο, πάνω από την είσοδο. Είναι σκαλιστός, επιχρυσωμένος και κοσμείται με τις εικόνες των τεσσάρων Ευαγγελιστών και μιας πέμπτης με αδιάγνωστη μορφή αγίου, λόγω των εκτεταμένων φθορών. Η αναμνηστική επιγραφή που φέρει ο άμβωνας, μας πληροφορεί ότι κατασκευάστηκε το 1883 με δαπάνη του ίδιου του ναού. Δεν σημειώνεται όμως το όνομα του σκαλιστή, αλλά ούτε και του ιερέως ή του Επιτρόπου. Ο ΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΙΚΟΣ ΘΡΟΝΟΣ Ο Επισκοπικός θρόνος είναι ξυλόγλυπτος με επίχρυσα τμήματα και άλλα χρωματισμένα σε διάφορες αποχρώσεις. Στο κέντρο της ράχης του θρόνου υπάρχει ενσωματωμένη μικρή εικόνα του αποστόλου Βαρνάβα, του ιδρυτού της Εκκλησίας της Κύπρου, με ημερομηνία 1875. Its existence is betrayed by the stone-built canopy on the wild rocks. The chapel is set in an intact cave. The forty stalactites of the cave are what encouraged a devout christian to turn it into a place of pilgrimage. It cannot be missed and it is especially awe-inspiring in the evening when is floodlit. The ascending of the 153 steep steps to the chapel rewards the visitor with stunning views. At its foothill all around there is the multicolored, cosmopolitan Protaras. In the east, as far as the eyes can see, unfolds the immense deep blue sea. Looking north there is Famagusta, Pentadaktylos and on a clear sky the visitor even sees the Karpasia Peninsula; all in the occupied part of Cyprus. Originally, it consisted of the double room, a smaller room with an arch and the sun room with two arches. There was a water-well and an enclosure in the centre of the yard. The Traditional House was renovated in 2010. A third room was added to the original building as a continuation of the sun room, as well as covered areas on the eastern and western sides of the yard, wash rooms and a boiler room in the basement. An attempt was made to harmonise the old, renovated house with the new additions, in order that the building could function as an exhibition home. The house features: the sun room with two stone-built arches and a stone column in the centre; the traditional double room with a big stone arch in its centre, a window high up on the northern wall and a door and two windows to the left and right of the southern wall. Typical, fitted plaster shelves can be seen high up on the entire northern wall as well as on the eastern and western walls. The small room consists of a stone-built arch in its centre, a single door with no windows and a small fitted plaster shelf to the left of its entrance. The new room which has been added has its entrance via the sun room, a door and two windows facing the yard. Showcases have been built on the walls of the room to hold the exhibits. The covered areas have been built using wooden columns and beams. THE EXHIBITS All the traditional exhibits have been donated by the citizens of the Paralimni Municipality. The collection and classification of these items focused on the creations of popular Cypriot art. The exhibits are a collection of items which were associated with the lives and everyday pursuits of local inhabitants. The exhibits are of various ages though most of these date back to the mid-nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Through these exhibits it is possible for us to study the roots, the lives and the traditions of previous generations. Η παραδοσιακή κυπριακή κατοικία βρίσκεται στο κέντρο του Παραλιμνιού. Κτίστηκε το 19ο αιώνα και ανακαινίστηκε από το Δήμο Παραλιμνίου διατηρώντας τα ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικά της. Οι παραδοσιακές καμάρες και τα ενδημικά φυτά στην αυλή του, το κάνουν ιδιαίτερα όμορφο. Ο εξοπλισμός ενός παραδοσιακού, κυπριακού σπιτιού και τα αγροτικά εργαλεία που χρησιμοποιούσε μια παραδοσιακή αγροτική οικογένεια εκτίθενται στα τρία του δωμάτια και στην αυλή του. Το σπίτι που λειτουργεί σήμερα ως μουσείο παραχωρείται από το Δήμο για την τέλεση πολιτικών γάμων.
