On the exact place a 13th-century church was gradually transformed into the fort we see today. However, until its final form, edifices of distinct roles occupied the site. Depicting mainly scenes from Greek mythology they were discovered accidentally in 1962 by a farmer ploughing his field. The mosaics at the House of Dionysos depict the god of wine, while the House of Thyseus is named after a mosaic showing the ancient Greek hero brandishing a club against the Minotaur. Many other superb panels can be seen in other houses such as in the House of Aion, the House of Orpheus and the House of the Four Seasons. The mosaics are on the Aphrodite Cultural Route. Τα ψηφιδωτά ανακαλύφθηκαν τυχαία το 1962 από ένα αγρότη που όργωνε το χωράφι του και απεικονίζουν κυρίως σκηνές από την Ελληνική μυθολογία. Τα ψηφιδωτά του Σπιτιού του Διονύσου απεικονίζουν το Θεό του κρασιού, ενώ το Σπίτι του Θησέα πήρε το όνομα του από τα ψηφιδωτά που έδειχναν τον αρχαίο Έλληνα ήρωα να κραδαίνει ένα ρόπαλο εναντίον του Μινώταυρου. Πολλές άλλες υπέροχες σκηνές βρίσκονται και στα υπόλοιπα σπίτια όπως αυτό του Αίαντα, το Σπίτι του Ορφέα και το Σπίτι των Τεσσάρων Εποχών. It was once the residence of the Dragoman of Cyprus, Chatzigeorgakis Kornesios, who was executed by the Ottomans in 1809. The building was restored by the Department of Antiquities and today houses the Cyprus Ethnological Museum. In 1988 it was given the “Europa Nostra” award.
