<text>The Troodos Mountains!
Τhe Troodos Mountain range is known the world over for its astounding geology and
sediments of ophiolite. It was formed many millennia ago when a piece of the sea bed
slowly rose up due to the collision of the African and European tectonic plates. Now,
standing at 1952 metres above sea level, the mountains of Cyprus have become a true
magnet for peace and tranquility and a real earthly paradise. Here you can
experience a wonderful holiday, breath in the fragrance of the pine forest and wild
flowers and engage in a multitude of outdoor activities. The Troodos Mountain is the
green heart of Cyprus and a complete source of life and culture, offering unique thrills
to its visitors.

Introduction...
Excursions to the mountains, hiking or walking along the nature trails are
certainly enjoyable activities. However, they can hide difficulties and
dangers that everyone should be aware of so that, if necessary, these can
be faced confidently, without panic.

Preparation...
You are strongly advised to be correctly prepared and to study in advance the route
you are going to take, the degree of difficulty, the dangerous spots, the weather
conditions and the time you will need, taking into account your capabilities and
powers of endurance.
A basic rule is never go to the mountains alone and never exceed your
capabilities. Before you start always inform someone responsible about the
route you plan to take.

1

In the Summer...
•
•

Wear clothing made of cotton or non-synthetic material that will absorb
perspiration. Never expose sensitive skin to the sun as this can result in
sunburn and dehydration.

•

Wear walking or hiking boots, with strong ankle support, making sure that
shoe-laces are always well tied to avoid snake bites and falls.

•

2

Protect your head and the back of your neck with a hat, or handkerchief to
avoid sunburn.

Always apply a high SPF suntan lotion to exposed skin and wear suitable
UV sunglasses.

In the Winter...

•

Wear several light layers of clothing instead of a single thick article of clothing.

•

Clothes should be loose to allow freedom of movement.

•

Carry a light rainproof anorak or a jacket.

•

Wear suitable UV sunglasses. Glare and reflection from the snow is harmful to
the eyes.

•

Wear suitable non-slip shoes or boots.

3

Equipment...
Carry an ergonomic backpack containing the following items:

•
•

a good map of the area

•

a compass and GPS

•

a fully-charged mobile telephone and portable charger

•

a whistle, torch, pocket-knife and a garbage bag

•

sufficient quantity of water and food

•

4

an individual first aid kit

You will also need a hat, sunglasses and a walking stick or strong cane.

Natural Dangers...

•

In the mountains you should always walk very carefully and if possible avoid
areas where there are landslips, falling rocks or stones, or where pieces of rock
are detached.

•

Never walk on the edge of a precipice and do not step on stones that may be
unstable.

5

...Natural Dangers...

•
•

Avoid stepping on slippery rocks.

•

6

Always follow the mountain pathways.

The danger of fire in areas with thick vegetation is extremely high. Only
in designated picnic areas is it safe to light a fire. Never throw cigarette-ends,
matches or other flammable material. If you notice a forest fire, immediately
contact the Department of Forests at 1407 or 112.

...Natural Dangers...
•

Before stepping on wild herbs, bushes or rocky areas you are advised to check first
with a walking stick or cane for the possible presence of snakes.

•

Do not lift stones with your bare hands as reptiles, scorpions, spiders etc may
be hiding behind or under the stones.

•

Do not leave food in the rest areas.

•

In winter time when there is snow, you should avoid going to areas off the
roads or not clearly marked trails. There is a danger of sinking in the snow or
being swept away by snow slides. Never use garbage bags as sleighs on
the mountain slopes.

...Natural Dangers...

•
•

Do not approach the perimeter of dams as there is a danger of slipping and
falling into them.

•

8

Avoid moving in the areas below the dams. There is a danger of water
rushing out from the dam overflow.

Comply with the warning signs in the dam areas and in the perimeters of the
reservoirs.

Storms & Fog...

•

In case of a storm, gale or lightning never seek cover under trees, electrical
cables or steep and unstable rocks. You may be struck by lightning or by
falling stones.

•

Stay away from river beds or the beds of streams during storms and heavy
rainfall. You may be swept away by a sudden rush of water.

•

Avoid excursions to the mountains when there is fog. If you are already hiking
and notice that fog is gathering, stop and go back to a safe area.

9

Special Precautions...
•
•

Avoid the consumption of alcoholic drinks.

•

Do not collect cultivated fruit and vegetables or wild capers and asparagus,
as they may have been sprayed with pesticides.

•

Never eat unfamiliar wild fruit of the forest.

•

In case of adverse symptoms following the consumption of wild
mushrooms, induce vomiting immediately and subsequently take the
victim to a medical centre, bringing along any untouched samples from
the mushrooms that have been consumed, if available. If not, you must bring
along the remains of the lunch or even part of the vomit.
Emergency Telephone: 112

•

If you are bitten by a poisonous snake it is important to remain calm. Avoid
all unnecessary movements and call for help immediately. It is important to
get to the nearest medical facility in the area as soon as possible.

•

Do not enter caves or the galleries of abandoned mines.

•

10

Do not drink water from springs unless there is a sign saying that the water
is potable. (See drawing on page 15).

Get information from the Games Fund on hunting activities in the area,
before you plan your excursion, particularly during the period of mid–August
to the end of February.

Protection from
insects, bees, wasps etc...
•

Do not approach beehives. If attacked by bees avoid nervous and sudden
movements indicating panic. Insects get more aggressive when they feel
threatened.

•

Avoid using strong smelling creams and perfumes.

•

Stay away from garbage bins and do not leave food and fruit exposed as it will
attract wasps and other insects.

11

Protection of the environment
and its bio-diversity...
•
•

Do not use farming implements to collect mushrooms, as this is disastrous
both for mushroom spores, which are inside the soil, as well as for
nearby saplings and bushes.

•

12

Do not cut or uproot wild flowers. Uprooting plants or collecting and
removing any flora from the State Forests without the permission of the
Department of Forests, is prohibited by Law.

Do not destroy geological formations or collect fossils.

...Protection of the environment
and its bio-diversity...

•

Do not drive your vehicle outside designated roads.

•

Do not leave taps running. Every drop of water is precious.

•

Do notleave garbage anywhere except in the special garbage bins available.
If there are no bins, take your garbage with you.

13

...Protection of the environment
and its bio-diversity...
•
•

Do not disturb newborn animals hidden in the vegetation, even if they look
abandoned.

•

Do not destroy or damage nests.

•

Keep your dog on a leash to avoid accidents to bird nests and to young
animals such as mouflons and hares. Please note that there are areas
where it is prohibited to bring dogs.

•

14

Do not disturb the wildlife. Each species has its own reproduction period
which is vital for its survival.

If you spot a wounded animal contact the GAME FUND immediately. If
the wounded animal is a mouflon or fox, avoid direct contact as they are
capable of harming people.

Fishing in dams...
•

Fishing in dams is allowed only after securing a fishing license from the Department
of Fisheries and Marine Research.

•

It is prohibited to fish in rivers and streams in Cyprus using any fishing implement.

•

Do not disturb protected species such as the Cypriot water snake (Natrix natrix
cypriaca), the freshwater crab (Potamon potamios) and the freshwater turtle
(Mauremis caspica rivulata), which can be found in the dams.

•

Swimming in the dams is prohibited.

•

Never enter riverbeds, dams or lakes even if there is no water in them, as you may
get trapped in the mud.

15

Bear in mind that, in the same way you want to enjoy the mountains,
others who go there after you also want to enjoy them.
For this reason your activities should in no way cause damage to the
fauna and flora or the environment in general. Following this simple
code means that everyone can leave the mountains with a clear
conscience and pleasant memories.

We are all responsible for the protection
of the Environment and its Bio-diversity!

ROAD SAFETY NEW ENGLISH

Page 3

We hope you enjoy your time with us in Cyprus and
encourage you to explore the island. We have a modern and
efficient road system that enables easy travel between all
major towns and many places of interest. Before heading out
onto the road, please take the time to read the following
important information.
●

In Cyprus, we drive on the LEFT side of the road. NOT the right.

●

For their own safety and the safety of others, drivers must adhere strictly to the
national speed limits. The maximum speed permissible on the island’s major
highways is 100 km/h and the minimum is 65km/h. Unless otherwise posted, the
maximum speed limit on ordinary inter-urban and rural roads is 80km/h. In built
up areas, the maximum limit is 50km/h, unless otherwise posted.

●

It is prohibited to drive if the levels of alcohol in the blood or breath are above the
admissible limit. The admissible limit in the blood is 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100
millilitres of blood (BAC 0.5 mg/ml). The admissible limit in breath is up to 22
micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of exhaled air.

●

The use of hand-held mobile phones while driving is prohibited. Drivers wishing
to use their mobile phone while driving must use a hands-free device.

●

Seatbelts are obligatory both in the front and back seats of motor vehicles. Children
less than 1.5m in height must wear a suitable safety belt or be restrained with a suitable
restraint system.

●

If you will be driving a motor vehicle during your stay, note that a valid driving
licence is required, keeping in mind the following:
- European citizens may drive on their country’s driving licence.
- Non-European visitors may drive on their country’s driving licence for a
maximum period of 30 days or on a valid international driving licence.
- Citizens from Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Australia, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine,
Serbia, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, U.S.A, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa
and S. Korea may drive on their country’s driving licence for a maximum period
of 6 months. Upon the completion of the 6 month period, they are required to
apply for a Cypriot driving licence without taking a driving test.

- Citizens from countries that do not fall in any of the categories mentioned above
are required to acquire a Cypriot driving licence by following the appropriate
procedure i.e. taking a driving test (both theory and practice).
●

If you are going to drive a motorcycle or moped you must have the following in mind:
- The law states that both the driver and passenger must wear a helmet.
Rental agencies should supply helmet(s) at the time of rental upon request.
- A passenger can be carried on appropriate motorcycles/mopeds provided that
he/she is over 12-years-old and sits astride the seat.
- The headlight must be switched on during the daytime also.

●

Be sure that you are covered by insurance for injury or damages.

●

Pedestrians must remember that traffic moves on the LEFT side of the road. Therefore
you must always:
- Walk on the pavement. In case there is no pavement, walk on the right side of
the road (ie. towards the oncoming traffic).
- Look to your right first before crossing any road.
- At night, use special fluorescent badges on your clothes or wear light coloured
clothes so that you can be easily seen on the road.

Highways:
- Vehicles move in the left lane.
- Use of the right lane is only allowed for:
For over-passing another vehicle
When the left lane is not free
Giving priority to a vehicle entering the highway
It is forbidden on the highways:
- to stop and/or park a vehicle
- for pedestrians to enter or cross them

- for pedestrians to enter or cross them
- for a bicycle, moped or agricultural machine to be driven

●

In case of an accident, call 199 or 112 immediately.

ENJOY YOUR STAY AND PLEASE HELP US KEEP THE
ROADS OF CYPRUS SAFE FOR EVERYONE.

Diarizos Valley

cheers along!

Wine is not a new story for Cyprus. Recent
archaeological excavations which have been
undertaken on the island have confirmed the
thinking that this small tranche of earth has
been producing wine for almost 5000 years.
The discoveries testify that Cyprus may well
be the cradle of wine development in the entire
Mediterranean basin, from Greece, to Italy and
France.

Come -tour, taste
and enjoy!

This historic panorama of continuous wine
history that the island possesses is just one
of the reasons that make a trip to the wine
villages such a fascinating prospect. A second
important reason is the wines of today -finding

and getting to know our regional wineries,
which are mostly small and enchanting.
Remember, though, it is important always to
make contact first to arrange your visit.
The third and best reason is the wine you
will sample during your journeys along the
“Wine Routes” of Cyprus. From the traditional
indigenous varieties of Mavro (for red and rosé
wines) and the white grape Xynisteri, plus the
globally unique Koumandaria to well - known
global varieties, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Shiraz. Let’s take a wine walk.
The wine is waiting for us!

ALONG THE PATH OF THE RIVER…
AND OF HISTORY
This itinerary takes us eastwards from the city of Pafos and covers the
valleys of the rivers Ezousa, Xeros and Diarizos. A er a coastal run we
shall climb the south-western foothills of the Troodos mountain range
observing the course of the River Diarizos, crossing it several times.
We are going to traverse a circuit with fourteen mountain villages en
route and visit two small - yet interesting wineries.
Something more; we shall discover the places where a Goddess, the
pre-Christian Venus of Pafos, was worshipped. There are unusual and
interesting rock formations to wonder at, too, in the Mamonia area.
Life has gone on for millennia in these fertile valleys. Hints are
everywhere of its continuity and customs. Each succeeding kilometre
reveals pictures, scents and sounds of the circle of fertility. With every
little look into the surroundings, discoveries and monuments attest to
its worship. Venus passes on her influence to the Virgin Mary, mother
of today’s faithful.

general
characteristics
A vineyard at Stavrokonnou

The Diarizos Valley lies south-west of the Troodos hills and takes its name from
the river that runs through it. In a relatively small area, this valley has a wide
variety of fauna and flora.
Climate: The region is characterised by a relatively gentle climate:
moderately cold in the winter and temperate in the summer.
Terrain: Following the ancient creation of Cyprus as a result of volcanic
activity, the Troodos Mountains were thrust above the rest of the
terrain. In the region we also find the “Mamonia Area”, a complicated
tectonic concentration of volcanic and sedimentary rocks.
Vineyards: This region does not have a “Controlled Denomination of
Origin”. Nevertheless, we shall encounter some interesting wines and
come across 18 grape varieties.
Red varieties: Mavro, O halmo, Marathe iko, Lefkada, Carignan,
Mataro, Oellade, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Alicante B.,
Grenache, Shiraz, Merlot.
White varieties: Xynisteri, Palomino, Chardonnay, Sultanα Malaga.

7

the route
Our starting point is the Pafos motorway
round-about. From there we head towards
Lemesos (Limassol) for about six km, until
we reach the exit to Acheleia (B6). On the
“old” Pafos - Lemesos road you can see the
experimental plantations run by the Institute
of Agricultural Research. Much interesting
work is done here.
Continuing towards Lemesos (Limassol)
for about eight more km, we pass under
the motorway and over the River Xeros,
which runs down from the Asprogremnos
Reservoir. Before the road reaches the
bridge, we take the side road to Nikokleia,
on our le . It rises up on the west bank of
the River Diarizos. Within a distance of four
km we come upon the village, overlooking
the river valley. On the opposite side of
the valley lies the ancient settlement of
Palaipafos, today’s “Kouklia”. It was the
centre of worship of the Cyprus Aphrodite.
Leaving a visit to Nikokleia for our return
trip, we turn le heading towards Choletria
village. It lies about six km away. On each
side of the road, the land is covered with
seasonal plants, olive trees and citrus fruit
groves. Climbing up, grazing land appears
along with vineyards, almond groves, and

9

Mosaic featuring Dionysos -God of wine

indigenous Cyprus trees, as well as newlyintroduced species, like eucalyptus.
The village of Choletria is located on the
eastern side of the River Xeros, and it is
awash with green. Most houses are modern
and are surrounded by gardens, groves of
almonds, citrus and other trees. It is a small
village, typical of the region’s settlements.
Leaving from the north point of the village,
we drive about four km to the settlement
of Stavrokonnou. This is also a small village
but, in contrast to Choletria, it maintains its
traditional architecture. Its characteristic
“Makrynarka” houses have suffered limited
modern “intrusion”. The surrounding
landscape, however, features the same
characteristics, although the altitude begins
to make itself felt and the vine yards increase
in number.
Almost five km further on we come across the
village of Kelokedara, at an altitude of around
700 m. It is a small settlement, mostly with
traditional buildings, and with a fountain at its
entrance. Here, too, we find typical samples
of “Makrynarka”. These characteristic houses
got their name from their elongated shape.
This came about as a result of the custom

of the region’s families to add a new room
to the le or to the right of the old house to
accommodate each child as they married.
For those with 4 x 4 vehicles, we can turn le
a er Kelokedara on an un made-up track and
three kilometres later visit the monastery of
Panagia tou Sinti, at the bottom of the Xeros
Valley.
Continuing north, the road climbs up steep
hillsides. It twists and turns excitingly by turn
on mountain ridges and varying inclines,
revealing brilliant views of the river valley.
On each side there is a vigorous panorama
of vineyards, olive groves, farms and grazing
land as well as copses of cypress trees, pines
and eucalyptus.
Before arriving at Salamiou, our next port-ofcall, half way into the six km that separate it
from Kelokedara, we come upon a wonderful
double view: to the le lies the Xeros Valley,
while to the right the Diarizos Valley unfolds,
both viewed from a height of almost 700 m.
In Salamiou, the settlement and the farms
command a vantage point over the River
Diarizos. Just outside the village there is a
picnic area which overlooks the Xeros Valley.

Inside a Winery in Praitori

11

A little further on, a side road can be found
leading to the Panagia tou Sinti monastery.
On the right, an unpaved road leads to the
Lagria hill, and the winery by the same name.
This hill, rising up 40 to 50 metres higher
than the village, covers an area of almost
a square kilometre and is covered with
vineyards. Bushes grow at its rocky parts,
along with low vegetation and sparse trees.
The vines are planted at different levels and
varying inclines, in a location blessed with
long hours of sunshine. Although dry, rooted
on essentially rocky terrain, the vineyards of
Lagria produce wines of very good quality.
The “LAGRIA” winery is owned by the
President of the community of Salamiou,
Mr. Kostakis Avgousti, whose family have
grown vines and made wine for generations.
It is a small production winery, utilising
grapes from its own vineyards and of nearby
growers. It bottles four wines: one white from
local Xynisteri (fresh and fruity and best
drunk well chilled when it is young), a dry red
blend of local and imported grape varieties,
a Cabernet Sauvignon varietal and a rosé,
which is a blend of the local “Mavro” and
“Xynisteri” varieties. It is best to pre-arrange
the visit of large groups. The tour, conducted

in English and Greek, concludes at the tasting
rooms, where the wines may be purchased.
You’re looking at a long history in Salamiou.
There have been people living here for
four or five thousand years. Today’s village
demonstrates the popular architecture of
many centuries. In one traditional, twostoried building just along from the church,
you’ll find the local taverna, while “Kafeneia”
(local coffee shops) and other shops are at
hand.
By Salamiou’s fountain, stop and admire the
imperious Cypress tree, an estimated 750
years of age and dedicated to the Virgin
Mary. On the higher reaches of the village
your eye gazes upon the sight of an 800
metre drop to Diarizos Valley. The ancients
called the river the “one hundred mouth
flows”, indicating its sources from a hundred
gullies.
Very near, in a region covered with fertile
plots, vineyards and gardens, is the Panagia
Salamiotissa monastery, with a church of
about 500 years old.
Northwards, the road soon leads to Mesana.
It is a small, pretty village close to the
edge of the Troodos forest, which will

Traditional house exterior at Filousa

accompany our way for some time. Three kilometres onwards we come to sparsely
populated Arminou, on the western slopes of the Diarizos Valley. Here the road
descends down the valley crossing the river. A er a while the road starts heading
uphill through lovely scenery and gorgeous air. The route abounds in “mountain
greenery” indeed, and the ubiquitous vine of course! We soon conclude the five km
separating Arminou from Filousa, finding now ourselves on the eastern side of the
River Diarizos bank.
In a short while we come upon the pretty hamlet of Praitori. It is here that we can
visit our second winery, “NELION”, which belongs to Neofytos and Helen Ioannou.
They have built a compact plant in a lovely location, near the village, and they are
dedicated to their art. They produce an interesting range of wines, including a
notable Rosé. They are unique in growing and making wine with one of the great
grape varieties of Bordeaux, the red Cinsault. Visits are by arrangement. Wine and
other items can be purchased at their shop and light meals are available.
A er seeing the winery, Agios Nikolaos village, with its minaret’s green cone visible
above its roo ops, is worth a little detour.
At a number of points here, recently constructed bridges cross the river. But there
are others worth visiting, dating from the Venetian period. Six km north, through the
forest, is the Tzelephou Bridge, over the River Diarizos. In the forest you can also
find the bridge of Roudkias, over the River Xeros (six km west of Tzelephou Bridge)
and Elias (Olive) Bridge, over a tributary of the River Diarizos.
From Agios Nikolaos we drive back to Praitori, and a er three kilometres
southwards, we arrive at the picturesque village of Kedares. More greenery here
with plenty of vineyards around it...
The road undulates as its winds down to the river for the next five kilometres.
It crosses the River Diarizos and almost immediately its tributary, the River

13

The mediaeval bridge of Elias

Xeragaka. We arrive at the almost abandoned
settlement of Kidasi. Then comes a
spectacularly beautiful drive along the
bottom of the valley with the river on the le
hand side. On the right the view is sometimes
green, at others of steep cliffs. Nearby are
the “Rocks of Hasamboulia”, an interesting
oddity: two huge blocks of stone that lean
against each other, leaving enough room
between for us to pass. Their name comes
from three robbers of the 19th century, who
evaded their pursuers by sheltering here.

(resting place for travellers and their
animals). It is a suitable base for the
exploration of archaeological sites of the
nearby villages, Kouklia, the Pantheon of
Venus, Asprogremnos Reservoir and the
abandoned Souskiou village, where crossshaped statuettes from the Bronze Age were
discovered. Near here there is an important
Neolithic cemetery, where excavations
revealed intact burial sites and gems from
tombs which have enriched the Museum of
Cyprus.

The distance from Kedares to Agios Georgios
is approximately 14 km. This settlement has
singularly fertile land around it. Mamonia
village, a short drive further on, is the next
habitation. The area’s name describes the
structure of its rock outcrops, which are
characterised by both volcanic (lava) and
sedimentary (crystallised) limestone. From
Mamonia it is just a kilometre or so to the
next settlement, Fasoula, attractively placed
astride the River Diarizos.

Our final stop on this journey before our
return to Pafos is at our starting-point,
Nikokleia village. It is a beautiful settlement,
calling to mind the long history of the area
and the glory of its ancient King, Nikoklis,
from whom it took its name. A er our wine
tastings, we can relax here and enjoy some
coffee. And then, with the memories of the
hills, the forests and the lovely scenery of our
drive by the River Diarizos fresh in our minds,
we can return to our base. A lovely “Wine
Route” fruitfully accomplished.

The next spot, five km south, is Nikokleia
village. Before we reach it we shall come
across a hostel housed in a restored
building of traditional architecture. Its
original function was as a Caravanserai

Pitsilia

cheers along!

Wine is not a new story for Cyprus. Recent
archaeological excavations which have been
undertaken on the island have confirmed the
thinking that this small tranche of earth has
been producing wine for almost 5000 years.
The discoveries testify that Cyprus may well
be the cradle of wine development in the entire
Mediterranean basin, from Greece, to Italy and
France.

Come -tour, taste
and enjoy!

This historic panorama of continuous wine
history that the island possesses is just one
of the reasons that make a trip to the wine
villages such a fascinating prospect. A second
important reason is the wines of today -finding

and getting to know our regional wineries,
which are mostly small and enchanting.
Remember, though, it is important always to
make contact first to arrange your visit.
The third and best reason is the wine you
will sample during your journeys along the
“Wine Routes” of Cyprus. From the traditional
indigenous varieties of Mavro (for red and rosé
wines) and the white grape Xynisteri, plus the
globally unique Koumandaria to well - known
global varieties, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet

WILD…
AND BEAUTIFUL
This route takes us through the eastern aspects of the Troodos
Mountains. It is called Pitsilia, and the tourist comes upon 14 villages
involved in vine growing or winemaking in one way or another.
The road twists upwards and round the steep hills and villages are
dramatically revealed as we round the bends. The peaks of Troodos
look down on the vineyards, the highest, Olympus, at 1952 m,
followed by Madari at 1672 m and Papoutsa at 1530 m.
In this almost wild landscape, cultivated land clings to the steep slopes,
a tribute to man’s determination. Trees abound, in orchards, gardens,
streets and yards. But the loveliest array of greenery is that of the
vineyards. Their produce supplies the two wineries we can visit on this
itinerary.
Rural life in Cyprus has always been hard. People’s lives were related
to the land and geared to the seasons and the moon’s phases. Many
growers still plan their pruning and other aspects of the vine year
by the moon’s positions -which some modern organic winemakers
are returning to. For the wine-lover each season brings something
different: the cold winter lull in vine growth and vine pruning… Spring,
and the warming of the air bringing shoots of new growth. Then,
summer and the watch to ensure healthy vines and grapes. And,
finally, as the hot months fade into autumn, the making of the year’s
wine. Vine leaves turn gold, red and dark and then fall -their greenery
replaced by new grass and plant growth following the autumn and
winter rains.

general
characteristics
“Mavro”, a common grape variety of the area

Plenty goes on in Pitsilia villages, quite a lot of it to do with food and wine. The
area is surrounded by four forests: Troodos forest in the west, Machairas forest
in east, the Adelfoi Forest in the north, and Lemesos forest to the south. It is
dominated by the peak of Madari (1,672 m). Generally, there is ample rainfall
here.
Noted for its scenery and its many activities, the Pitsilia area is also well known
for the friendliness and hospitality of its residents. Two wineries lie before us to
look at, taste and enjoy…
Climate: This is pleasant light Alpine -winters can be fresh and cold,
with frosts and snowfalls. Summers are warm and pleasant with the
altitude to temper the sun’s heat,
Terrain: The region is mountainous, but there are substantial
cultivated areas that co-exist with the natural vegetation and
woodlands. The soil is usually grey in colour, as befits a limestone
area, with some sandy constituents.
Vineyards: 32 villages of the region are included in the area of
production of “Controlled Denomination of Origin” (WCNO) “Pitsilia”.
Apart from local Mavro and Xynisteri, 11 other varieties of vines are
cultivated.
Red Varieties: O halmo, Marathe iko, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Mataro, Mavro, Shiraz, Lefkada.
White Varieties: Xynisteri, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Malaga.

the route
We leave the A1 Motorway and take the
B8 road towards Troodos. It is a wide
road and we can make speedy progress
upwards. A er a few kilometres we drop
down into a valley which opens into the
largest Reservoir in Cyprus, Kouris, whilst
on our right is Alassa village. Motoring
further north we come to Trimiklini village
which constitutes the lower boundary of the
Pitsilia area.
Strung along either side its newly re-built
main road, Trimiklini preserves its village
identity. It’s worth a stop for the shops,
coffee shops and places to eat. Year-round
there are stalls selling local fruits, preserves
and other food products. In the village, too,
there are good places to buy basketwear
and pottery. Truly a modern Cypriot village!
A little northwards, we turn right on the
E806 to Pelendri village. The road takes
a spectacular climb, with scenery marked
by rocky outcrops and pine trees. Sadly,
areas here have been decimated by recent
fires, leaving a moonscape rather than the
greenery we are accustomed to. Incredibly
good fortune stalled the fires at the gates
of our first wine stop: up a winding track

deep in what was the forest is “TSIAKKAS
WINERY”, a ten year old family business,
whose founder gave up banking to start
the winery. Even a er the fires this is a
spectacular location to taste Cyprus wines.
Costas and Marina Tsiakkas make wines
from both indigenous and international
grape varieties. They strive to enhance
quality with the help of specialised
oenologists and are achieving success.
Their team is passionately dedicated and
their enthusiasm charms visitors. You may
try whites made from Chardonnay, Xynisteri
and Sauvignon Blanc, and their red Cabernet
Sauvignon is also praised.
Group visits are preferred, by prior
appointment. There are facilities for tastings
and sales, snacks and picnics.
We leave the winery and re-join the E806,
turning le towards Pelendri. This is semicircularly located in the hillsides overlooking
the River Limnatis Valley. There is old and
new here, as befits a village with its own
businesses and agricultural activities, with
recently built homes side by side with old.

“Soudjoukos”, a traditional Cyprus sweet

The bustling main street of Pelendri can be
quite testing for the driver, but it is only a
couple of minutes before we are through
and on our way to Potamitissa (3 km), and,
a little further on, Dymes village. Though
these hamlets do have some permanent
residents, many houses are weekend
places for city dwellers. Those who do live
here have some lovely homes, with shaded
courtyards.

As a result the range of the wines, produced
by skilled oenologists, is achieving deserved
success. Try the white “Petritis” Xynisteri
and Chardonnay; the red blend “Andessitis”
as well as the Cabernet Sauvignon.

We pass through Dymes and head for
Kyperounta village, four km away. This is
one of the larger villages of Pitsilia and
continues to grow. It is a green patchwork of
dwellings, smallholdings and vineyards, very
near to the forest. Our second wine port-ofcall is just outside, on the way to Handria.

Close by, we find Chandria village. Here
the altitude is around 1300 m, with
Madari peak 300 metres higher. On its
south side, with pine trees prominent, the
Mavro and Xynisteri grapes grow in little,
utterly timeless vineyards. No mechanical
cultivation or harvesting here!

“KYPEROUNTA” Winery is accommodated
in modern, purpose-built premises, with
pleasant views down the slopes. This is a
medium sized winery with annual production
rising beyond 300,000 bottles. It is owned
by the Photos Photiades group, notable for
their Carlsberg Cyprus Brewery. They have
utilised the expertise of Greece’s largest
wine producer, Boutari, to develop this
winery.

Lagoudera, the next village, is a pretty little
settlement built in amphitheatric style on
the northern side of Madari, maintains
its traditional character. Higher than
Lagoudera, in a north-westerly direction, we
move on to Saranti village, where we may
visit the Virgin Mary of Arakas Monastery.
It is a typical 12th century provincial
church with wooden roof adapted to the
mountainous areas.

Visits are by arrangement. The conducted
tour has English and Greek commentaries
and there are facilities for tasting and
buying the wines.

Traditional wine-storage jars

11

It is included in UNESCO’s list of World
Cultural Heritage monuments.
From Lagoudera our road moves south
taking us to Polystypos at an altitude of
1150 m. It’s a lovely little place, rich in
almond, walnut and cherry trees, surrounded
by vineyards of our own Cyprus grapes.
From here turn eastwards awhile to Alona
village, about four kilometres. At the entry
to the village lies the fountain “I Vrisi ton
Poulion”, which is quite hidden. Best to
get out and find it on foot. It is an isolated
place, cool and silent, but in a way full of life!
Colours and aromas assail one’s senses.
And then down into the village, with tree
shaded streets and stone steps to take us
around.
Our next stop is Agros, south-west of Alona,
a distance of a little more than 15 km. The
first half of the way is rural and packed
with mostly “Mavro” grapes. There’s a wild
beauty here, the trademark of the Pitsilia
area! In the second half of the way we pick
up the E903 road that runs down from
Palaichori.

A flowering almond tree at Agros

13

“O halmo”, one of the grape varieties here

At an altitude of 1100 m Agros is the heart
of the Pitsilia area. It is a large place, and a
tourist centre for locals and foreigners alike,
with good accommodation, and related
services. Local Industries include rose and
flower waters, bottled water, wine, flowers,
honey and preserves.
The village streets demonstrate
architecture of many generations -and
virtually every house has its balconies with
attendant flowers in hanging pots. Agros is
vibrant!
Now we drive south and a er three
kilometres reach Agios Ioannis, a
picturesque village. Its immediate neighbour
is Agios Theodoros, our last stop before
returning to Lemesos. It used to be called
Eptalofos, meaning Seven Hills. It is a village
with a unique character, with a seldom-seen
harmony of people and nature. Streets
planted with pines take your eye to the
forest, to the fields and vineyards. Various
trees mingle with each other, and all seem
to embrace the entire village.
And so we say Farewell to the Pitsilia area.
Descending southwards, we pass Zoopigi,
Gerasa and Paramytha (the home village

of Cyprus’s tennis star Marcos Bagdatis).
Finally we pass the hospitable Palodia
village, and we end the tour at Agia Fyla,
just north of Lemesos. The distance did not
exceed 120 kilometres, but its many sights
will remain with us.
