Within its domes and minarets is the tomb (built in 1760) of Umm Haram, a lady who enjoyed a respected position with the Prophet and whom he called "Honoured Mother". She had come to Cyprus with the Arab invaders in 694 A.D. bud died accidentally when she fell off her mule and broke her neck. As one of the most holy places in the Moslem world it has been an important place of pilgrimage for Turkish Cypriots, while in the past Turkish vessels sailing past dipped their flags in homage. Built in the 14th century in magnificent Gothic style it was a subtle but beautifully adapted imitation of the Cathedral in Reims. It was converted into a mosque after the invading forces of the Turkish general Lala Mustapha Pasha captured the walled city in 1571 A.D.
