The stamps from this series feature two different examples of traditional Cypriot popular crafts, a continuation of the series circulated last year.
The €0,41 cent stamp depicts the art of basket weaving, the making of baskets and other everyday objects, using the raw materials from Cyprus’ bountiful countryside, such as reeds, terebinth branches, stems from aquatic plants and so on.
The €0,64 cent stamp represents the craft of wood carving, carried out by local craftsmen, sculptors of wood, who created decorated items and furniture, such as chests or trunks for storing linen, ceiling beams, long wooden shelves, furniture and church furnishings such as icon and sanctuary screens, sanctuary doors, pulpits, often adorned with floral motifs, simple representations of animals or birds and geometric patterns

The commemorative card depicts the Birth of Christ.
The icon is from the Panayia Agrou Eleousa church, placed high in the iconostasis in the section of The Twelve Great Feasts (Dodekaorton). It is one of a number of icons created by the painter Solon, or Solomos Frangoulides, between 1932 and 1934.
In terms of style, the icons cannot be characterised as Byzantine or western. They are the result of the artist’s freedom of thought and imagination. For this reason they display a unique beauty and serenity that can be enjoyed by all.
The impressive silver gilt (1815) that adorns the €0,41 stamp, showing the Virgin Mary - “Kyra Makedonitissa” - holding the Christ child, is in the iconographic style of “Anothen oi Profites” (“Above the Prophets”).
Idealisation and “fear of the unknown” characterise the multi-faceted composition. The prophets and two angels hold scrolls with text referring to the Theodokos (Mother of God). At the right foot of the Theodokos is an area for the veneration of the icon.
The design of the cover was created by John Cornaro (1745-1812), an engraver and painter from Crete. The heads of the majority of the figures are painted by the artist in the style of the School of Kornaros
The two €0,34 and €0,64 stamps, apart from the religious significance of Christmas, also depict the festivity of joy and hope, a celebration steeped in ancient traditions.
The first stamp depicts the New Year custom of the throwing of olive leaves into the fire. The second, reflects the sending of Christmas wishes to loved ones; wishes both for the joyful message of Christmas and for a better and happier new year.

This series of stamps celebrates the rich tradition of Cypriot folk art, revealing its natural character and takes as its inspiration the ancient arts that are still alive today.
The four stamps depict:
(a) woodcarving, in the form of a hand-carved chair
(b) decorative art, showing traditional symmetrical engravings using pyrography on dried pumpkins
(c) pottery, with an anthropomorphic clay vessel
(d) the skill of the silversmith, as expressed in the “merrecha”, a small ceremonial vessel with a narrow opening, used to sprinkle people with fragrance, usually rosewater, at celebrations or weddings.
Photos of the above illustrations were taken from the Cyprus Handicraft Centre and the folk Art Museum.

The stamps in this issue depict four Cyprus castles to be found in the area of the island that has been occupied since the Turkish invasion in 1974.
Three of the stamps in the issue depict castles in the highest remote peaks of the occupied Pentadaktylos mountain range. These castles dominated the sea of Cilicia and, along with a number of forts were used to track ship movements in the area.
The €0,04 stamp depicts Buffavento castle. This is a Frankish castle, the name of which means ‘buffeted by the winds.’
The €0,34 stamp shows Kantara castle, at the easternmost end of the Pendalaktylos range and dominating the north coast and the eastern Mesaoria plain.
The €0,41 stamp depicts St. Hilarion castle, that took its name from a monk who lived as a hermit in the area. There are many folk traditions associated with the building and history of the castle and with the beautiful Queen of Cyprus whose home it was.
The €0,75 stamp shows Kyrenia castle, built by the Venetians and later renovated by the Lusignans. Under British control, the castle was used as a police barracks and as a prison for members of E.O.K.A. Since 1969 it has housed the famous “Kyrenia Ship”.

For the second year running member states of the Postal Union of the Mediterranean “Euromed Postal” are issuing a single stamp with the common theme “Boats of the Mediterranean”.
Throughout mankind’s history the sea has played a very significant role in the expansion of trade and today we can say it is the cradle of globalization. The different types of boats contributed to achieving that objective. Leisure boats, fishing boats and trans-shipment boats are some of the types that member countries of the Postal Union for the Mediterranean will illustrate on their stamps.
The Cyprus stamp depicts four different boat types including a Cypriot fisherman’s boat in the background.

The Akamas Peninsula
The Akamas Peninsula is on the western coast of Cyprus. The area is one of exceptional beauty and forms an enchanting mosaic of many contrasting plateaus and plains, streams and gorges, sandy and rocky beaches, caves and islets. The area and the state forest in particular form a refuge for more than 650 species of flora, of which 42 are endemic and 200 species of fauna, of which 11 are endemic.
The Avakas Gorge
The Avakas Gorge is in the Peyia State Forest, within Akamas, north of the “Toxeftra” beach, at the mouth of the Avgas River, from which it takes its name. It is the most impressive gorge on the island with limestone rocks rising more than 30 metres and is home many rare, endemic species of flora and fauna

The theme for this year’s “Europe” series is “Old Toys”, chosen by the European Public Postal Operators (PostEurop) and common to all country–members of the Organisation.
By Old Toys we mean the variety of playthings that were such an important part of the lives of children in days gone by, giving them not only great pleasure but at the same time contributing to their social development and encouraging habits that would be useful in the future.
The €0,34 stamp depicts children playing with a top (svoura), a spinning, pointed toy of wood or metal, either in a single colour or, more often, multi-coloured, thrown by hand or with the aid of string or rope to whirl on the ground.
The €0,64 stamp depicts young children playing with marbles (volous) (known in the Cyprus dialect as “pirilia”). Marbles were small, round objects, single- or multi-coloured, made of glass or other materials. They were used to play a variety of games.

Preserves have always played an integral part in traditional Cyprus hospitality. The preservation of fruit and vegetables with sugar, as the main preserving agent has always been part of home economics especially at the villages. Products that were plentiful at times and scarce in others, either due to them being out of season or their market value too high could be processed and used throughout the year. In our days, these products are used both domestically and on an industrial scale forming part of our export trade. These sweets were the first item to be offered to guests when visiting friends and acquaintances.

2015 marks the centenary of the Armenian Genocide which many wish to obliterate from the memory of the living. Cyprus Post and Armenia Post are jointly issuing a common design stamp in remembrance of this tragedy. The Melkonian Orphanage was founded in 1924 by the Armenian industrialists Garabed and Krikor Melkonian of Egypt in order to house and educate the refugee orphans who had survived the massacres that had taken place in Ottoman Turkey during the First World War. The first 103 orphans began to arrive in 1925. In later years the orphanage was known as the Melkonian Educational Institute. The image on the stamp is based on a photograph taken in the 1940’s by the late Haigaz Mangoian, a renowned photographer, himself a refugee, whilst the trees in the foreground were planted by the orphans in memory of their parents.
