Cyprus’ geography and environment are the main reasons why the island has such a rich variety of flora. Today there are 140 types of endemic flora, some of which are spread widely around the island and others that grow only in the Troodos mountain range, Pentadaktylos and the Akamas peninsula. Some are very rare and under threat. The Cyprus Post has issued a series of four stamps representing endemic flora.
Crocus hartmannianus
An endemic, perennial herbaceous plant with corms, it is found in sparse pine forests and bushes, at an altitude of 650-1100m. It blooms in January–February and grows sporadically in the Troodos and Pentadaktylos mountain ranges.
Carlina pygmaea
An endemic, perennial, prickly herbaceous plant that usually grows in brushwood, dry meadows, rocky hillsides and moorlands. It is widespread from sea-level up to an altitude of 1100m. It blooms in June–October.
Centaurea akamantis
A typical plant of Cyprus that can be found only in one area of the island, the Akamas. Its name indicates this fact. It is a very rare plant and cannot easily be seen because it is found in high rock crevices. On the positive side, it blooms for a large part of the year, from April to November.
Tulipa cypria
An endemic, perennial bulbous herb, it thrives in grain crops, pastures and open bushes at altitudes up to 300m. It is restricted to the Akamas Peninsula and in some areas of Pentadaktylos, blooming from March to April.

The two Christmas stamps, with their festive flavour, represent what is probably the most magical time of the year for both young and old. For children, especially, it is a wonderful season.
They adore dressing the Christmas tree with its colourful decorations and lights. Decorating the Christmas tree is a popular tradition the world over and in keeping with the spirit of the days.
The religious-content stamp depicts the Western-style icon of the Adoration of the Magi, from the church of Panayia Faneromenis, currently to be found in the Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation in Nicosia. The icon dates from the Venetian occupation (1489–1570) and, on the left, portrays the Holy Family. The Theotokos (the Mother of God), in the style of a Western Madonna, is seated and facing right, towards the three Magi opposite her, holding in her arms the naked infant Jesus, who is accepting their gifts and blessing them.

Τhe Republic of Cyprus became member of the Council of Europe (CoE) on May 24th 1961. It will take over, from November 22nd 2016 until May 19th 2017, the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, for the fifth time during its membership. The CoE comprises 47 member States. All Council of Europe member states have signed up to the European Convention on Human Rights (1950), according to which High Contracting Parties are committed to ensuring human rights and fundamental freedoms to all persons under their jurisdiction. The European Convention on Human Rights is, still today, regarded as one of the most outstanding successes of international law. The Cyprus Chairmanship is an ideal opportunity to strengthen the principles and values protected and promoted by this international organisation.”

GEORGIOS PARASKEVAIDES: He was born in Athens in 1916. He studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. In 1941, he met Stelios Joannou with whom he founded in partnership the Joannou and Paraskevaides construction company known as J&P and succeeded within a few years in establishing it as an international contractor colossus, promoting Cyprus on a global basis. In 1959 he married Thelma Leonidou Frangou. They had three children: Efthyvoulos, a civil engineer, Leoni, an architect, and Christina, who studied business administration. He and his wife set up the Georgios and Thelma Paraskevaides Charitable Foundation and the Paraskevaidion Surgical and Transplant Centre. The state, the church and numerous organisations have honoured him for his diverse social actions, patriotism, philanthropy and great contribution to his country, the church and to Hellenism. He died in London on the December 5th, 2007, at the age of 91.
ANASTASIOS LEVENTIS: Anastasios Georgios Leventis (1902-1978) from the village of Petra, Solea, created a financial colossus in West Africa thanks to his hard work, farsightedness, innovation, and solidarity with his fellow-man. Ηe was a brilliant entrepreneur and major philanthropist who helped the Republic of Cyprus in many areas. As a representative of Cyprus to UNESCO, he denounced the destruction of the cultural heritage in the occupied regions and assisted in the repatriation of archaeological treasures. Three major painting collections formed the core of the A. G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia. He founded the A. G. Leventis Foundation to promote Cyprus internationally, disseminate Greek culture, develop new forms of education for the young and protect the natural environment, and was
a fervent philanthropist.
STELIOS JOANNOU: Stelios Joannou was born in Lefkara in 1915 and was an internationallyrespected businessman, well-known for his charitable activities. His partnership with Georgios Paraskavaides in 1942 developed into ‘J&P’, the largest construction company in Cyprus, which contributed significantly to the presence of the country in the international business world. Stelios Joannou and his wife Elli Mousoulou, passed on their love for their homeland and fellow man to their children, Dakis, Sylvia and Christos. Outstanding examples of Stelios Ioannou’s philanthropy in Cyprus are the ‘Christos Stelios Ioannou Foundation’, in memory of their son, Christos, who died at an early age, and the ‘Ayios Christoforos Home’, both for persons with special needs.
He received significant honours for his multi-faceted contribution to charitable foundations and associations, including the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The establishment of the Research School of Classical and Byzantine Studies at Oxford University and the model library at the University of Cyprus, both of which bear his name, are thanks to generous donations from his wife. He died in Nicosia on May 8, 1999 and the government honoured him by covering his coffin with the colours of the Greek flag.

In previous decades, Cyprus, apart from mineral wealth, possessed many natural springs producing water of the highest quality. Hundreds of natural springs and founts all over the island provided water for villagers and their orchards for centuries.
Nearly every village had its own stone-built fount.
Every household obtained its water supply from the fount and this was mainly collected either by the women of the village, who were responsible for the household, or by young children.
But the fount had a wider role. It was a forum for discussion and communication between young girls and it was also a meeting place to exchange amorous glances with their beaux.
The two stamps depict the Fount of the Pegia Women (I Vrisi ton Pegiotisson), a €0,41 stamp and the Panayia Fount in Paphos, a €0,34 stamp.

For the third year running member states of the Postal Union for the Mediterranean “Euromed” are issuing a single stamp. This year’s common theme is “Fish of the Mediterranean”.
The Mediterranean sea is home to more than 1.700 species of fish and long before the Agricultural Revolution fishing villages might have appeared along the coastlines.
Archaeologists excavating 30.000 year old human sites have found only seashells from the Mediterranean but we can surmise that fish have been a staple diet of humans from times immemorial.
The €1,88 stamp depicts a montage of give species, namely: The Painted Comber, the Parrot Fish, the Peacock Wrasse, the Annular Sea Bream and the Snapper as symbols of the sea wealth.

The European Parliament Office in Cyprus, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Cyprus Post, in cooperation with the Philatelic Advisory Committee are organizing a competition among 2nd Lyceum pupils entitled ‘Stamp Art: The EU and Cyprus All Around the World!’ The main aim is to promote the European identity and the principles and values on which the Union is founded, including the wider knowledge and awareness among young people of the diverse benefits of philately. The four best designs to emerge from the competition were selected and are depicted on the stamps in this series and on the First Day Cover.

“Think Green” was the theme chosen by PostEurop for this year’s Europa stamp issue. Ιn designing the 64 cent stamp the artist has cleverly conveyed the view that it is up to us individuals to create a greener planet.
Thus we see a hand moving a paint roller from the left which shows a polluted grey countryside, to the right, where it is creating a greener and more pleasant environment. The hand, is the hand of each and every one of us as, contributing towards the creation of a cleaner and better world for generations to come.
This design submitted by Cyprus Post won the Europa stamp competition and it will be used by all participating countries.

Cyprus is once again taking part in the greatest sporting event on the planet. Four years after the triumph of the Cyprus team in London and the achievement of winning our first Olympic medal in modern history, our Olympic team is preparing for the 31st Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, from 5-21 August, 2016.
The goals are still high. We have confidence in the talent and in the efforts of our athletes to show that they are more than ready for the great sporting festival of the summer and to give us once again the opportunity to feel proud.
We all support the Olympic team in Rio, to give Cyprus a boost.
The Cyprus Post, in honouring this event, is issuing this commemorative series, consisting of four stamps depicting the sports in which Cypriot athletes are expected to participate.

In order to handle the massive problems caused by the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, with 200.000 Greek Cypriots displaced in their own country, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus set up a “Special Refugee Fund”. To support the Fund and to reduce the financial impact of the refugee
problem, Cyprus Post issued a special refugee stamp, which, under legislation, must accompany every object to be posted.
The 3 mils stamp from the 1971 Definitive Issue, which was overprinted with 10 mils value and the wording “Refugee Fund” in black, was the first refugee stamp.
At the end of 1974 the first official 10 mils refugee stamp was issued, depicting a Cypriot refugee old woman holding her grandchild on her shoulders.
In 1977 a new refugee stamp was in circulation, valued at 10 mils, in a black and white design by the well-known Greek engraver Tassos, depicting a refugee boy from Cyprus, sadly sitting in front of the barbed wires of occupation.
This particular refugee stamp was issued until 1984, when it was re - issued in the same black and white design valued at 1 cent. From 1988 until 2007, the same refugee stamp was issued in grey background. In 2008, it was re-issued at the value of €0,02. Since 2009, the refugee stamp has been re-issued with the same design, but with a different-coloured font. This year the refugee stamp has been re-issued in a grey-blue background.
