The Americans bearing in mind the huge debts that Canada had accumulated in the 1976 Games, put up even the Olympic flame for sale at U.S. Dollars 3,000 per kilometer. Greece in protest would not hand over the flame in a formal ceremony but has it transported by helicopter from Olympia to Athens airport whence it continued on its journey. At the end, the committee in charge of the L.A. Games had made a profit. One of the outstanding personalities in these Games was the American Carl Lewis who won four gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4X100meters relay and the long jump. But the most touching event was that of Elizabeth Gabriel Anderson Symes, running in the marathon. She entered the stadium staggering, her right leg and her left arm completely out of her control. The crowd in the stands sat stunned. Doctors in attendance at the Games rushed immediately to her side, but with great difficulty she made them understand she wanted no help. She persevered; the crowd burst clapping with encouragement and continued to do so as she stumbled right and left towards the finishing line. It took her 5 minutes and 22 seconds to be the 37th to cross the finishing line and she immediately collapsed from exhaustion. The crowd did not stop clapping. Television stations the world over kept repeatedly showing her tremendous and courageous effort and her picture appeared in all newspapers and periodicals. It was not until 1965 that a diver accidentally came across the wreck . I ts timbers were car bon dated to 388 B.C. and its cargo of olives and almonds to 288 B.C. The Depar tment of Antiquities classified it as an archaeological treasure and the American Institute of Nautical Archaeology was approached to help raise and preser ve it. This was done and it now lies preserved in Kyrenia castle. Kyrenia II, a full-sized model of the or iginal was built by the Hellenic I nstitute for the Preser vation of Nautical Tradition, at Perama in 1982. I t was not an easy task as traditional rather than moder n tools were used and the builders wanted to replicate ancient Greek shipbuilding methods to ensure authenticity. Kyrenia II was launched in 1985. The journey to the Statue of Liberty's Centenary Celebrations in 1986 was made possible in the safet y of a containership. An ocean crossing was not deemed possible, but it did sail into New York . It also sailed to Greece and back even though at times it had to be towed. It also made trips to Hamburg and Expo 92 in S eville, and was on show at various locations in Greece. Its final resting place is planned to be the Museum of Nautical History at Ayia Napa in Cyprus. Symmetry is the most vital of aspects to achieve harmony. And harmony is God. Man built amazing monuments full of symmetry. More than five times in my life, in Athens, Rome, Paris, and Brussels (Grande Place), I heard the same old question, "Do you see that amazing building? Well, it is not perfect. Do you see that small window there on the left? Well, it does not exist on the other side". The architect didn’t notice it until the building was finished, and he was so sad, that he climbed to the top of the building and committed suicide by jumping off the building. Symmetry, if you cannot achieve it, it is better to die. But in recent years we have come to see more and more buildings rising around us in full asymmetry. Many don’t like them. But this is the major change that has been taking place in the 20th century in all the arts, including architecture. The way of thinking is simple. Nothing on earth is absolutely perfect and therefore the contrast between the symmetry we seek and the asymmetry we observe brings to mind the perfection to which we aspire. Originally it contained four Gospels but unfortunately many parts are missing including the illuminations of St. Matthew and St. John. The 4c. and 20c. stamps are the miniature illuminations of St. Mark and St. Luke while the 13c. stamp depicts the beginning of the Gospel according to St. Mark . The surviving texts of the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. John are incomplete.
