To the women folk of the villages they were an invaluable asset, cared for tenderly as part of the family. These animals were their daily companions as they carried tools and instruments to the fields and returned laden with produce of the day or simply firewood for the hearth. As beasts of burden these sure-footed animals were their only means of transportation. Village life was leisurely and dictated at the mule's pace. On the other hand asses were said to be found in the wild at Carpaso in the late 18th century and it was permitted to hunt them being of little value since their natural obstinacy made it impossible to domesticate them. In 1958 the population of mules and donkeys was 46,763, but today they are a rare sight even in the villages and there is a donkey sanctuary at the village of Vouni in the Limassol district. At the Foreign Minister’s Conference in Nicosia, in 1988, the ministers welcomed the efforts of the United Nations Security General, which culminated in the Geneva meeting of 24th August 1988 between the President of the Republic of Cyprus and Mr. Rauf Denktash leader of the Turkish Cypriot community. The Ministers demanded the immediate withdrawal of all occupation forces and settlers and welcomed the proposal for demilitarization of the island made by the President of the Republic. The Ministers also stressed the need for the voluntary return of refugees to their homes, the respect for human rights and the fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots.
