Centennial trees, as nature’s monuments, are elements of our natural and cultural heritage. Such trees have managed to survive both bad weather conditions over the centuries as well as the disastrous insanity of fire and the inconsiderate human actions. Their existence runs alongside many important historical events and it is often connected to the traditions, myths and legends of our long-suffering island.
The centennial trees illustrated in these stamps are the Agia Mavri Oriental Plane, the Cypress in Kathikas and the Terebinth Tree in Apesia.
Agia Mavri Oriental Plane (Platanus orientalis)
With a girth at breast height of 8.20 m and 38 m in height, this tree is approximately 800 years old. This is a deciduous tree with a dense crown and a grey to white or grey to brown bark with palmate-like leaves borne alternatively on the stem. It is native to Cyprus and found in riverine settings and near springs. In 2004 it was declared protected.
Cypress in Kathikas (Cupressus sempervirens)
With a girth at breast height of 4.35 m and 14 m in height, this tree is approximately 700 years old. This is an evergreen tree with a broad or narrowly conical crown and a grey bark lightly fissured. It has small scale-like leaves arranged in opposite decussate pairs. It is native to Cyprus and often found in calcareous precipices and slopes in many places of the island and mainly in the Pentadaktylos massif. In 2017 it was declared protected.
Terebinth Tree in Apesia (Pistacia atlantica)
With a girth at breast height of 6.80 m and 10 m in height, this tree is approximately 1,500 years old. This is a robust deciduous tree with a dense crown, a brown-grey bark and compound leaves. It is native to Cyprus and found in villages, fields, rocky slopes, houses’ yards and near chapels in many places on the island. In 2004, it was declared protected.

Carnival is humanity’s oldest folk festival.
Ηistorically, the tradition of carnival refers to the Dionysian feasts of the Greeks, where people used to dress up, dance and sing, drinking wine to honour God Dionysos.
The carnival officially starts on Fat Thursday with the revival of customs and traditions. The carnival has been celebrated throughout the island in the recent years, however, it is traditionally linked to Limassol and it is an integral part of the distinct identity of the town.
During the carnival period, several events are organised in Limassol where drinking, satire, dancing, singing and fancy dressing prevail. The events culminate with the big carnival parade with the participation of thousands of locals and foreigners in costumes.

In order to handle the massive problems caused by the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, with 200.000 Greek Cypriots displaced in their own country, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus set up a “Special Refugee Fund”. To support the Fund and to reduce the financial impact of the refugee problem, Cyprus Post issued a special refugee stamp, which, under legislation, must accompany every object to be posted.
The 3 mils stamp from the 1971 Definitive Issue, which was overprinted with 10 mils value and the wording “Refugee Fund” in black, was the first refugee stamp.
At the end of 1974 the first official 10 mils refugee stamp was issued, depicting a Cypriot refugee old woman holding her grandchild on her shoulders.
In 1977 a new refugee stamp was in circulation, valued at 10 mils, in a black and white design by the well-known Greek engraver Tassos, depicting a refugee boy from Cyprus, sadly sitting in front of the barbed wires of occupation.
This particular refugee stamp was issued until 1984, when it was re - issued in the same black and white design valued at 1 cent. From 1988 until 2007, the same refugee stamp was issued in grey background. In 2008, it was re-issued at the value of €0,02. Since 2009, the refugee stamp has been re-issued with the same design, but with a different-coloured font. This year the refugee stamp has been re-issued in a grey-blue background.

The icon of the Birth of Christ is found on the temple of the church of Our Lady (Panayia) Odigitria in Galata. The icon was hagiographed by the monk and later abbot of the Holy Church of Stavrovouni, Dionysios, who came from Galata, in 1930 and there is a strong Russian influence in the hagiography.
The icon of the Birth depicts the unspeakable mystery of the incarnation of God, by presenting in micrography the whole universe and all God’s creation. God, humans, angels, animals and nature are expressed with a mystical spirituality and strong light. This is why the black colour of the Cave is not shown.
Christmas is children’s favorite time. Having their most festive smile on, they either sing carols to friends and relatives or they play in the snow.
The 34, 41 and 64 cent stamps depict exactly this joy of the children for the most magical and special season of the year.

An account of the resource
The Common Chaffinch, the European Greenfinch and the European Goldfinch belong to the family Fringillidae. Their special characteristic is the big conical beak used for crushing and peeling seeds, which are their basic food. They nest in Cyprus and they can be found on our island all year round.
The Common Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs stands out for the characteristic white bars on the wings. The male bird has brighter colours than the female one, especially in the spring and in the summer. In the summer, it can be found at Troodos mountains, while in the winter it flies in lower areas where there are trees.
The European Greenfinch Chloris chloris stands out for its bright green-brownish colour and the impressive yellow colour on its wings and tail. In the winter, it can be usually seen in flocks with European Goldfinches and Common Chaffinches. It nests all over the island, in places with trees (usually on cypresses), and even on the mountain tops of Troodos.
The beautiful European Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis usually flies in small groups (up to 20 birds) from bush to bush. As they fly, they call with a rhythmic silvery twittering. It has a melodic bird song and light flying.

Established in 1993, the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (IAO) is a political organisation with its International Secretariat based at the Hellenic Parliament in Athens. It consists of parliamentary delegations from 25 countries including Cyprus which is a founding member. The object of the IAO is to develop a multilevel political and cultural activity, encourage contacts and achieve broader relations between participating parliaments, as well as to promote the understanding of modern political phenomena and social trends and enhance the elements of Orthodoxy which favourably affect mutual understanding between cultures, peoples and States. This year, the IAO celebrates 25 years of creative parliamentary presence on the international stage and within the framework of the anniversary celebrations a remembrance stamp has been issued by the Cyprus Post upon a proposal of the House of Representatives.

This yearʼs Euromed Postal Joint stamp project is “Houses of the Mediterranean”.
The stamp of Cyprus illustrates a neighbourhood in the old town of Lefkosia with features of traditional architectural heritage.
The main building materials used for the walls of the traditional buildings in Lefkosia are limestone or stone and earth blocks. The roofs are usually very thick and made of beams (volitzia), reed mat, and in the upper part there were layers of earth or clay and tiles.
Traditional buildings are located in adjacent to the road leaving individual spaces in order to have access to the yard.
One of the features was the bay window (sachnisi), a light wooden structure with many windows projecting outwards which was used mainly as a gathering space during winter.

This year, the common theme adopted by the European postal organisation PostEurop for its Europa 2018 issue is “Bridges”. The Europa 2018 issue consists of two stamps illustrating two bridges in Cyprus.
The €0.34 stamp shows the Tzielefos Bridge in the District of Pafos, a few kilometres away from Agios Nikolaos village, in an idyllic area full of plane trees and rich in wildlife and flora. This little medieval stone bridge is the biggest bridge in Cyprus constructed across the Diarizos River supplying the Arminou dam located further down.
The €0.64 stamp shows the Akapnou Bridge in the District of Limassol. This little Venetian stone bridge has two arches and is located in the north-west of the Akapnou village, across a tributary of Vasilikos. This is a very interesting bridge since it has not been affected by time and we can still see the foundations of the little road going from east to west.

An account of the resource
Marios Tokas, was born in Limassol in 1954 and was engaged in music at a very young age. He studied at the National Conservatory of Athens and the School of Philosophy. After his studies he settled in Greece where he started a family. He composed great works of music inspired also from the rare Cypriot timbres, thus endearing them to every Greek. In 1978, he released his first album “Ta tragoudia tis pareas”. Each one of his songs was a great success and interpreted by renowned singers his music was disseminated quickly among Greeks everywhere. In 1996 he composed the symphony “Theogenitor Maria”. Some of his landmark songs such as “Annoula tou Chionia”, “S’agapo san to gelio tou Mai”, “I nychta myrizi yasemi”, “San trelo fortigo”, “Exartatai”, “S’anazyto sti Saloniki”, “Ta ladadika”, “Thalasses”, “Dydima Fegaria”, demonstrate Marios Tokas’ talent as a melodist. He composed music for some great poems, for theatre plays, movies, as well as children’s songs. The Turkish invasion and occupation inspired in him such songs as “Anasikose tin plati sou Pentadaktyle”, Ammochostos Vasilevousa”, “I diki mou patrida”, etc., which touches the heart of Cypriot Hellenism.
In March 2001, the President of the Republic of Cyprus bestowed on him the Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Cyprus and in 2002 he was awarded with the “Yiannos Kranidiotis” Prize.
Marios Tokas passed away on 27 April, 2008.

The FIFA World Cup takes place every four years and is the pre-eminent football event on the planet. In 1930, Uruguay was the country to host the very first World Cup final and this year Russia will host the 21st World Cup with the participation of 32 teams. The matches will begin on 14 June, 2018 and the World Cup final will take place on 15 July, 2018.
In order to qualify for the final, teams have to pass the qualifying process and the draw is held depending on their geographical position.
Brazil is the most successful team, having won five titles, followed by Italy and Germany with 4 titles each.
