Today Fulani and Wodaabe girls wear cowrie shells and beads in long stylishly decorated necklaces when attending tribal ceremonies. Among the tribes of Africa, cowrie shells are considered as symbols of fertility. In the Maasai culture young girls must be circumcised before marriage, and during the healing time they paint their faces with white chalk and wear headbands of cowrie shells. The shells are also worn as bracelets and necklaces to promote fertility. In the Ivory Coast, a Senufo diviner tosses cowrie shells on the ground and by the way they fall he interprets his client’s problems. In consultation with the spirits he then advises his client on what actions need to be taken. For the Berbers of North Africa, cowrie shells recall the shape of the eye. In jewellery the image of the hand and that of the eye are used to ward off the evil glance and protect the wearer. Cowrie shells are therefore tied to the necks and wrists of children as amulets to protect them against the evil eye. They are also woven into shawls, carved on wedding chests and painted on the walls of houses. Carved in 1476 by a wood-carver named Georgios Laskaris, it stands on a high base carved with 32 images from the Old Testament. The Cross itself has 12 illustrations from the New Testament. In 1792, the Dragoman of Cyprus Hadjigeorghak is Kornessios had the Cross covered in silver at his expense, and Meletios, Metropolitan Bishop of Kition then offered it to the Monastery of Stavrovouni where it now resides. Irresponsible and unacceptable behavior by road users, and, more often than not, excessive speed are the first causes of mortal injuries. Consumption of alcohol and/or drugs, non-wearing of seat belts or protective helmets, fatigue, carelessness by pedestrians and drivers all contribute to the tragedies we witness on the roads not only in Cyprus but in Europe too. In the fifteen EU States more than forty thousand fatalities are recorded and some 1.7 million people are injured every year. It is obvious that action taken to-date to educate drivers and road users on what constitutes correct safety manners has been inadequate. Drivers in Cyprus tend to take an aggressive attitude to driving and the notion of defensive driving is totally alien to them. It may be time for governments and law enforcing officials to take drastic action in conjunction with intensive education of all road users if this unnecessary waste of human life is to be curtailed.
