It is found all over the Mediterranean Sea mostly in deeper waters. It grows to a length of 50 cm. and its dominant color is red or orange. Its Greek name is scorpena and in Turkish it is called Kirmizi iskorpit. This family of fish known by their French name rascasses makes the best ingredient for the French dish "bouillabaisse" and a red scorpion fish serves as the most memorable symbol of Mediterranean fish. A large Red Scorpion fish may be successfully baked and will then present a dramatic appearance at table providing good helpings of remarkably firm white flesh. They were soon followed by other painters of great ability such as Adamantios Diamantis and George Pol. Georghiou who laid the foundations for the next generation of painters. One such painter is Christoforos Savvas whose painting "Motherhood" appears on this 30 c. stamp. He studied art from 1947-1959 and lived in London and Paris where he broadened his knowledge and explored new means of expressions. He transformed and ushered a new period in Cypriot contemporary paintings. In his abstract paintings he gave a great deal of importance to color and shape and the interaction between them.
