An account of the resource
The Cypriot male costume is of the type native to the Aegean islands, and is characterized by the "vraka" or baggy breeches. It is a loose pleated garment of black cotton, which differs in cut according to locality. It is worn with a white shirt or a colored one at work, and a woolen waist sash for everyday wear or a colored silk one for weddings, and is completed by a sleeveless waistcoat. Waistcoats are made of a variety of materials and are often attractively embroidered. Farmers and shepherds wore this costume with calf-boots making it close in style to Dodecanesian and Cretan costumes. Prior to the occupation of the island by the British, it was obligatory to wear the fez, a flat topped conical red cap with a tassel as seen on the 50 cents stamp. A white cotton skullcap was often worn beneath it to absorb any perspiration.

Cypriot women's costumes are of two kinds. The "saiyia", a long sleeved unassisted mantle open at the front from top to bottom and cut with gussets in front and at the sides, distinguishes the first, in two variants. The second is noted for the "phoustani", a tight-waisted dress with a close fitting sleeved bodice and a wide pleated skirt (see the 15 cents stamp). The "phoustani" were made of "alatzia" a polychrome, often striped cotton material. The undergarments, namely an off white chemise of two types, very long and full of white drawers was worn with both types of costume. The legs of the drawers were frequently embellished with woven embroidery the design of which differed from district to district. Two kerchiefs were worn on the head. The hair was tucked into and covered by the lower one, while the upper one was arranged in a number of ways. A kerchief held the waist tightly.

An account of the resource
The Cypriot male costume is of the type native to the Aegean islands, and is characterized by the "vraka" or baggy breeches. It is a loose pleated garment of black cotton, which differs in cut according to locality. It is worn with a white shirt or a colored one at work, and a woolen waist sash for everyday wear or a colored silk one for weddings, and is completed by a sleeveless waistcoat. Waistcoats are made of a variety of materials and are often attractively embroidered. Farmers and shepherds wore this costume with calf-boots making it close in style to Dodecanesian and Cretan costumes. Prior to the occupation of the island by the British, it was obligatory to wear the fez, a flat topped conical red cap with a tassel as seen on the 50 cents stamp. A white cotton skullcap was often worn beneath it to absorb any perspiration.

Cypriot women's costumes are of two kinds. The "saiyia", a long sleeved unwaisted mantle open at the front from top to bottom and cut with gussets in front and at the sides, distinguishes the first, in two variants. The second is noted for the "phoustani", a tight-waisted dress with a close fitting sleeved bodice and a wide pleated skirt (see the 15 cents stamp). The "phoustani" were made of "alatzia" a polychrome, often striped cotton material. The undergarments, namely an off white chemise of two types, very long and full of white drawers was worn with both types of costume. The legs of the drawers were frequently embellished with woven embroidery the design of which differed from district to district. Two kerchiefs were worn on the head. The hair was tucked into and covered by the lower one, while the upper one was arranged in a number of ways. A kerchief held the waist tightly.
