New horizons in air travel, warfare and the concepts of time and distance were looming. The first important conference on international air travel code was convened in Paris in 1910. Eighteen European States participated and a number of basic principles governing aviation were laid down. In the Italo -Turkish war of 1911, Italy became the first country to use aircraft in this way. Born out of military necessity, civil aviation had to be on an international level or not at all. Thus after the first World war the International Air Convention was drawn up by twenty-six Allied and associated Powers at the Paris Peace Conference. This foresaw the International Commission for Air Navigation (ICAN) to monitor and keep abreast of developments in civil aviation. In 1944 the US government convened the International Civil Aviation Conference in Chicago and with the signature of 32 States, set-up the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as a means of international cooperation and the fostering of uniformity in regulations at the highest possible degree. To ensure the practical application of air navigation services and facilities by States it was agreed to sub-divide the surface of the earth into a number of regions. Examples being the "North Atlantic Region" (NAT) and the European Mediterranean Region (EUR), where the co-ordination of trans-European operations with domestic and short range international traffic, constitutes the major problem. One of the aims of the ICAO is to foster the planning and development of international air transport so as to meet the needs of the peoples of the world for safe, efficient and economical air transport. Riches and wealth were being accumulated from the exports of this metal. By 1750 B.C. Cypriot copper was reaching Mesopotamia and Egyptian records from the 14th century B.C. refer to copper shipments. The shipwreck found near Uluburn, Turkey, provided he clearest glimpse of the Bronze Age trade in the Mediterranean. The ship, most probably a merchant one, yielded the single largest cargo of bronze age copper and tin ingots. Some ten tons of copper ingots and one ton of tin ingots were recovered. Tree-ring dating of a piece of firewood found on board suggested that the ship had sunk around 1300 B.C. The copper ingots were in the shape depicted on this stamp. (Extract from: L.Bonfante and V. In 12 B.C. the mines of Soloi were exploited by Herod the Great for the benefit of the Romans from whom he had leased them. Polis whose ancient name was Arsinoe Marion was the headquarters for the trade with the West. In the first half of the 20th century copper from the Skouriotissa mines was exported from the port of Karavostassi. In 1958 exports of cupreous concentrates amounted to 115,125 long tons and of cupreous pyrites to 228,821 long tons. Tree-ring dating of a piece of firewood found on board suggested that the ship had sunk around 1300 B.C. In ancient times Tamassos had abundant copper mines and was an important mining centre. Waistcoats are made of a variety of materials and are often attractively embroidered.
