The "Aeroplanes" commemorative series consists of three stamps with three landmark points in the history of aeroplanes.
On 17 December 1903, in a secluded US fishing village, two bicycle manufacturers flew the first aeroplane, changing the world forever. The Wright brothers' first flight lasted just 12 seconds and covered a distance of 37 meters, less than the length of a current Airbus A320 or a Boeing 747. It was the first time that a man made a completely controlled motor flight with a plane heavier than air.
In 1927 a transatlantic flight was made by Charles Lindberg, who travelled alone and non-stop, 5,800 km with his single-seater single-engine plane, Spirit of St. Louis, from New York to Paris, where a crowd of about 100,000 people was waiting for him, cheering for his courage and tremendous achievement.
The first flight to break the sound barrier was in 1947, piloted by Charles Yeager. According to the US National Air and Space Museum, the Bell X-1 aircraft reached a speed of 1,127 kilometres per hour.

Christmas is undoubtedly a celebration of love, joy and offering. All the houses are festively decorated and the housewives prepare all kinds of traditional sweets, filling the house with aromas and tastes.
The two stamps present traditional Cypriot sweets in Christmas format.
The €0.64 stamp illustrates the Nativity of Christ, from a fresco (end of the 12th century) in the Christos Antifonitis Church in Kalograia, which is an interpretation of the style of the Constantinople’s post-Comnenian art. At the opening of the cave, the Virgin Mary is depicted lying on a bed. On the left, in a built manger-sarcophagus, Christ is depicted swaddled. On the right are the Shepherds and below the bathing scene. After the Turkish invasion, the figure of the Virgin Mary was removed, irreparably destroying this unique composition.

Vassos Lyssaridis was born in Lefkara, on 13 May 1920.
He studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Athens and graduated with honors. He practiced general medicine and was President of the Medical Association (1967-1981). During his student years, he was Chairman of the Pan-student Committee of the Cyprus Struggle, Secretary of the Coordinating Committee of the Cypriot Associations and head of the local association of EAM Cyprus.
He took part in the national liberation struggle of EOKA (1955-1959) and voted against the Zurich - London agreements.
He led the resistance against EOKA B and against the coup of 15 July 1974.
He was continuously elected Member of Parliament from 1960 to 2006 and during the period 1985-1991 he served as President of the Cypriot Parliament.
In 1969, he founded the Socialist Party EDEK, of which he was President until July 2001.
He served as vice-president of AAPSO since 1961 and Secretary General of ICSA (International Committee in Solidarity with South Africa) which worked vigorously for the release of Nelson Mandela.
Being a politician, poet and painter, Vassos Lyssaridis left his mark on all aspects of the history and life of his country.
STELLA SOULIOTI
Stella Soulioti was born in 1920 in Lemesos and passed away in 2012. Her parents, Sir Panagiotis Kakogiannis, a lawyer, and Angeliki Efthyvoulou, were very progressive people who gave her, as she herself had said, the most important and valuable thing in life, a good education.
She initially studied secretarial studies in London and worked in the colonial government as secretary and chief of staff at the Public Information Office.
In 1943 she enlisted in the Royal Air Force (RAF) from where she retired in 1946 as a captain. She continued her law studies in London where she met Dimitris Souliotis with whom she got married in 1949 and had a daughter named Alexia.
She returned to Cyprus in 1951 and practiced law until 1960. She was the first and only female lawyer in Cyprus at that time.
From 1960 onwards, she became part of the history of the Republic of Cyprus which she served from various positions, providing important services.
She was the first female minister, the only female Attorney General to date and the first Commissioner for Legislation.
She served for 43 years as president of the Cyprus Red Cross as well as chairperson and member of various organizations, associations and committees.
For her versatile and valuable contribution, she received many awards and prizes.
NEARCHOS KLIRIDIS
Nearchos Clerides is among the prominent spiritual people of our country. A tireless worker of the spirit, he was born in 1892 in Agros and died in 1969 in Nicosia. He deserves special admiration, since he fought persistently and in adverse conditions, to realize his dream, to become a teacher. He developed a rich educational and social work, offering the maximum not only to his hometown, Agros, but also to Cyprus and Hellenism.
He is one of the most prolific Cypriot writers, dedicated his life to the spiritual rise of his homeland and contributed greatly to the dissemination and rescue of our popular culture, by collecting, studying and publishing folk songs, fairy tales, customs and legends. As a result of his hard work, he has published about 50 schoolbooks and 27 other independent works, and published hundreds of studies on most aspects of local history, geography, rural life, Cypriot monasticism, and local ecclesiastical tradition.

65 Years of EOKA Liberation Struggle
This year marks the 65th anniversary of 1st of April 1955, the day the EOKA struggle began. A milestone for Cyprus history, because it proved the mental strength of Cypriot Hellenism and its strong faith in the demand for Enosis (Union) with Greece. A milestone in world history, because it has demonstrated the power of the desire for freedom that has pervaded the darkness of colonialism. The peaceful young people of Cyprus turned into excellent and resourceful freedom fighters, the pupils turned into a rushing volcano and the women turned into mental strength beacons. The participation of the whole Hellenism of Cyprus is the component that made the Struggle great, aroused the admiration of all free men and women around the world and forced Great Britain to withdraw, resulting in the creation of the Republic of Cyprus.
25 Years of Melathron Agoniston EOKA
In 1995, the Melathron Agoniston EOKA started its operation based on an idea and vision of the surviving fighters of EOKA 1955-1959. With the motto "Our debt to those who died, our debt to those who live", they all worked hard with sympathy and mutual support and achieved this sacred goal with the full support of the State, the Church and organized bodies and organizations.
The Melathron first opened its doors for the Fighters of our Liberation Struggle and then for the fighters of all the modern struggles of Cyprus. In our days, it serves everybody who needs it.
The Melathron has been operating since the establishment of the "Home for the Elderly", while it can be proud of its "Rehabilitation Centre" specializing in the rehabilitation of the nervous, musculoskeletal and vascular systems, as well as in other diseases.

For the seventh consecutive year, Member States of the Postal Union for the Mediterranean "Euromed Postal" issue a stamp with a common theme. This year's theme is "Traditional Gastronomy".
The stamp of Cyprus illustrates kolokasi, a purely traditional Cypriot food cooked in various ways.
With its characteristic conical shape and special taste, kolokasi is identified with the Cypriot Gastronomy and the whole culture of the island.
It has a high nutritional value and significantly shields the immune system. Kolokasi is rich in vitamins A and C, proteins, carbohydrates and contains fibres as well as amino acids.

International Year of the Nurse and Midwife and 200 Years since birth of Florence Nightingale
Each year, May 12th is established as the International Nurses Day. 2020 has also been designated as the year of the nurse and the midwife. Nurses and midwives are the "bridge" of health care, at the forefront and a key factor in achieving universal health coverage as they are the link between the community and the complex health system.
The Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association has been established in Cyprus since 1971, representing both Nurses and Midwives locally and internationally.
2020 is also the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, a British pioneer in modern nursing, a woman who devoted her life to caring for the sick and who founded the profession of nursing sisters.

An account of the resource
During three centuries (1571-1878) of Ottoman occupation of Cyprus the town of Larnaka was the centre of commerce and the abode of the consular corps. Correspondence was minimal and any mail was hand carried by a ship’s captain.
The first ottoman post office opened in Lefkosia in 1871, and the first postal route between Larnaka and Lefkosia was opened. Inland post was carried by horses, mules and camels on dirt tracks from ancient times.
In 1878 when Great Britain took over the administration of the island’s post offices were opened in every town. The transportation of mail was by means of a diligence drawn by two horses and two mules.
In 1905 a railway service began between Ammohostos and Evrychou via Lefkosia and Morphou carrying passengers, goods and mail. The transportation of mail by train ceased with the closure of the railway in 1951.

Stelios Kyriakides, a born winner from Statos, Paphos, who, by his stubbornness and will surpassed himself and managed to turn the eyes of the entire world on him. A world-famous long-distance champion.
In 1933, he came first in the Pan-Cyprian track and field events with the Gymnastic Association “Olympia” of Limassol. In 1934, he competed for the Greek National Team and came first in the Pan-Hellenic and Balkan track and field events.
After that, he won many medals and distinctions in many international events, culminating in winning the 50th Boston Marathon in 1946 at the age of 36 setting the best time in the world.
His first words when he arrived at the US were: “I am here to run for 7 million famine-ravaged Greeks”.
It was the fight of his life and managed to raise millions of dollars for the humanitarian aid called “Package Kyriakides” giving rise to hope for Greece ravaged by the occupation and civil war.
He remained in Greece where he happily lived with his wife and two children, leading the effort for the revival of Greek sports and offering generously his assistance to his fellowmen, until the end of his life.

The Olympic Games return to Tokyo after 60 years. From 24 July to 9 August, athletes from all over the world will meet at the biggest sporting event. Our Olympic team shall be present at the largest gathering of people and cultures across the globe, at this ultimate sporting event held every four years.
We have worked hard to secure our qualification and honorary participation. We believe in our potential. We aim at the top against the best athletes.
We are confident that sports will give our compatriots a chance to feel proud of our homeland once again.
