At the age of 18 she entered the Order of the Sisters of our Lady of Loreto in Ireland and from there was sent to Darjeeling, in India. She took her first vows in 1931 but received permission from the Catholic Church to leave the order to tend to the poor and the sick of Calcutta. She founded the Missionaries of Charity. Her incessant work and devotion in setting up hospitals, clinics and homes to care for the disadvantaged people, be they children, the terminally ill or the abject poor, earned her the love of the people of Calcutta and the respect and admiration of all the world. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979, but above all she will be remembered for her humanity, humility, kindness, gentility and her unswerving and unselfish devotion to those who needed her most. On Sunday 19th July 2003, about 300,000 people from all walks of life congregated at St. Peter’s Square for the beatification of Mother Theresa, and to hear Pope John Paul II declare her "Blessed" during the open-air Mass over which he presided. The ceremony brings Mother Theresa one step nearer sainthood though many believers considered her a saint during her lifetime. In the late twenties and early thirties the transitional period from "silent" to "sound" films was problematic for cinemas everywhere. By the early 1950 s cinemas formed a huge part of the entertainment business and in Cyprus open air cinemas were very popular. Statistics of the film industry in Europe collated in 1992 and 1994 showed that cinema admissions peaked in 1953 with just under 59 million tickets being sold. But with the introduction of television in the mid 1950 s cinema attendances went into decline. The decline was accelerated when films became available on videotapes. As evidenced by the European statistics (1950-1994) cinema attendances have been falling ever since 1953, with the lowest fall in number being registered in 1992. The European trend was reflected in Cyprus too and many cinemas had to close down. A revival in cinema attendances has been noted in recent years and today cinema goers in Cyprus enjoy the latest releases at the same time as the rest of Europe. Many books have been written about her life and times which attracted painters such as Titian and Gentile Bellini to draw her portraits and composers such as Gaetano Donizetti and Giovanni Pacini to write operas in her honor. The Bellini portrait considered to be the most authentic is in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, while the portrait on this stamp, considered to be a version of the Titian portrait is in a private collection in Nicosia. Caterina was the daughter of Mark Cornaro of the San Cassiano family who were very rich and powerful and owned vast lands, farms, etc. in Italy and Cyprus. Her mother was Donna Fiorenza, daughter of the Emperor of Trebisonda, Alessio Comneno, thus making her of Greek descent on her mother’s side. Although her marriage to the Lusignan King James was arranged more for reasons of convenience and state reasons Caterina came to love and admire James. Their marriage was solemnized in 1472 in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Famagusta. When the King died in July 1473 at Famagusta, Caterina was proclaimed Queen of Cyprus (1473-1489). In Nicosia, scenes of great enthusiasm followed and the citizens wanted her to return. As she could not do so immediately she ordered that 1,000 bushels of wheat be sent to Nicosia in appreciation of their loyalty. She was much loved by her citizens and when she returned in 1475 she was received with a tumultuous welcome at Famagusta Gate and the ringing of the bells of St. Sophia Cathedral. The name Stavrovouni derives from the Greek words "Stavros-cross, and Vouno-mountain". A religious center since the 4th century A.D. Stavrovouni is the earliest documented monastery on the island. Many centuries ago travelers referred to it as the convent of the Holy Cross and one can read about it in the memoirs of the Russian Abbot Daniel who stayed on the island in 1106. He recorded that the Holy Cross was located on Mount Olympus for the purpose of warding off all evil spirits and curing illnesses.(Many travelers at the time mistakenly thought that the mountain was the highest in Cyprus.) Wilbrandi de Oldenborg visited the monastery in 1211 A.D. and wrote that the life of the inmates was very unlike that of monks. In the 4th century the monastery was inhabited by Orthodox monks who lived according to the code of Saint Basil, but in 1305, Ludolf von Suchen, a priest from Westphalia noted that the monks belonged to the Order of Saint Benedict. In 1888 the Church, the iconostasis and the monks’ cells were completely destroyed. The only relic, which has been preserved to-date, is a silver cross in which a minute piece of the Holy Cross is inserted. It is the only reliquary still kept at the monastery. Recently the monastery underwent a complete renovation and the small church restored with frescoes and icons by the well-known painter Father Kallinikos. The legend of the foundation is recorded in these painting. Nowadays the monks live a very strict form of monastic life similar to that of the monks on Mount Athos, unlike as in other monasteries and churches in Cyprus, women even today are forbidden to enter the monastery.
