Moths are classified as insects and belong to the order of Lepidoptera. Insects are the largest class in the Animal Kingdom and some one million of them have been described to date. They (the insects) represent at least three- quarters of all living organisms. Moths are nocturnal insects and are apt to scorch themselves by fluttering around a light source. The stunningly colored mosaic patterned wings of moths and butterflies often help them to remain camouflaged, especially when these blend into their surroundings. The 15 cents stamp depicts the Acherontia atropos moth better known by its common name Death’s Head Hawk Moth. It has a wing span of 11-14 cm and is the largest to appear in Great Britain. Its range covers the whole of Europe (except the far North) and Africa. It flies at dusk and it habitually enters beehives in search of honey. The eggs are laid single on leaves of a wide variety of plant but especially on those of the potato family. The life cycle of a moth (the same applies for a butterfly) extends over four stages.
1. The Ovum (egg) usually laid on the food plant.
2. Larva (caterpillar) it changes its skin three to five times and appears to do nothing but eat and grow.
3. Pupa, the larva buries itself in soft soil about 15 cm below the soil surface. Where a moth pupa is covered in silk it is called a cocoon. (in the case of butterflies it is called Chrysalis) 4. In this stamp the designer portrays to us the struggle between Dighenis and Charon from the poem of the same name. Above them both is a golden bird. The legend is that God sent Charon to take the soul of Dighenis. When Dighenis and Charon met they went to the arena where they fought for three days and nights without either being able to win. Charon returned to God and asked that he should defeat Dighenis. God, however, got angry because Charon had fought rather than execute his order, and sent him back to accomplish the task. Charon transformed himself into a golden bird and took the soul of Dighenis to God. The legend says that Charon was a man and that God had summoned and told him to fetch him souls. When Charon went for the first time to take the soul of one on his deathbed, he saw on approaching the house that all the village folk had gathered to mourn him and his heart was saddened. He entered the sun room, the first in the house, and seeing the relatives crying his heart broke. When however he entered the dying man's room and heard the lamentations of his wife and the wailing of his children, he could not withstand it and went back to God without the man's soul. Where is the soul? asked God. I could not do it replied Charon. God then slapped him so hard that he turned deaf. That is why he no longer hears our wailing and we can exert no influence on him. One of his characteristics is his ability to transform himself and become unrecognizable. This is why he metamorphosed into a golden bird when he returned to take the soul of Dighenis. People say that he deceives children with rose petals and that is why they are smiling when asleep.

The European Championship of the Men’s Club was played at PalaEur in Rome 22nd- 24th April 1997. FIBA the governing body of international basketball ranked the top twelve European National Federations on the basis of their inter national records over the past three years, Greece, France, Italy and Spain were ranked 1st to 4th respectively.Twenty four clubs competed and each played a total of 16 games. The top four teams in each of the four groups advanced to the best of three playoff series until four teams remained. The final six teen teams consisted of three each from Italy and Spain, two each from Greece and France, and one each from, Croatia, Slovenia, Yugoslavia, Germany, Turkey and Israel. The Championship Final was between Olympiakos (Greece) and FC Barcelona (Spain). Olympiakos were the winners and the most valuable player was their own David Rivers, the guard.

A long time ago, Archbishop Makarios III had said: "It is possible for the two parties to find a way to self - government and it is possible to find a way to safeguard the rights of Greeks and Turks in Cyprus; and in peaceful cooperation, coexist for their mutual benefit and common prosperity. Neither chauvinistic tendencies of past eras nor any sort of prejudices on the part of Greek and Turkish Cypriots can do any good. The cruel experience of the past must be a lesson to both sides".

This Christmas set depicts frescos from the Latin Chapel of the monastery of St. John Lampadistis in the village of Kalopanayotis. These 15th Century frescos are part of a series of wall paintings in the Italo-Byzantine style illustrating the famous hymn in honor of the Virgin Mary, sung in the Greek Church, in parts, during the evening services on the first four Fridays of Lent and wholly on the fifth day. The hymn known as "Akathistos" because it is sung standing up consists of twentyfour stanzas. The 30 cents stamp depicts the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt from the 11th stanza. The Virgin Mary with the infant in her arms rides sidesaddle on a white donkey with Joseph leading the way. Three idols of false gods are falling off the ramparts of a walled city.

Description
An account of the resource
Capparis spinosa is the botanical name of the common rough and prickly southern European shrub with long trailing shoots better known as the caper plant. It grows in dry uncultivated fields and rocky surroundings up to an altitude of 350 meters. Its large white flowers with rose or mauve tips appear bet ween May and August and the flower buds are eaten pickled.
