The wall painting illustrated on this stamp comes from the Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour ( Tou Sotira) at Palechori (Palaeochorio). The building is from the early 16th century, and the interior of the chapel (except for the roof ) is completely painted with a series of wall paintings of the post Byzantine period. An account of the resource
Monastic Gospel books with intricate and beautiful illuminations provided craftsmen in the Middle Ages an opportunity to produce some of the most magnificent works of art. Gold and silversmiths of Cyprus who confined their work mainly on the production of ecclesiastical objects of art, and who had developed their trade considerably, began to plate the covers of Gospels in gold and silver. The 10 cents stamp illustrates the Annunciation from a plate decorated in the repousse technique on a printed Gospel of 1768. The illustration follows the post-Byzantine iconography.

English: The first cases of AIDS were diagnosed in New York City in 1977, but the disease AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) was first recognized as an infection in 1981 and as caused by a virus in 1984. By 1995 the entire genetic structure of the virus was worked out and by 1996 chemicals designed as drugs called "protease inhibitors", to interfere specifically with one of the seven different genes were being administered to patients. (John Maddox, The Oxford History of the 20th century p.42) In 2001, three diseases namely AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria collectively killed 5.7 million people worldwide. Kofi Anan formed the United Nations Global Fund to fight these diseases and called for members of the United Nations to raise U.S. Dollars seven billion each year to bring them under control around the globe. An account of the resource
Pictured on this stamp is "Famagusta Gate" which forms an integral part of the Venetian walls that fortified the city of Nicosia in the 16th Century. A magnificent historic relic bequeathed to us by the island's turbulent history it must have witnessed some of the most memorable days in the life of the citizens of Nicosia. It was from this gate that in 1878 the British contingent of the Royal Marine Artillery and Light Infantry under the command of Captain Kelley, R.M.A. entered Nicosia. The Venetians called it "Porta Guiliana" but it was also known as "Porta di Sotto" (lower gate) because of the low level inside compared to the outside. The Turks in turn called it "Taht-el-Kaleh" (beneath the fortress). Inscribed above the entrance on a large piece of marble is the "Tughra" or monogram of Sultan Mahmoud II (1809-1839) and dated 1236 (our year 1821) by the Islamic calendar. The Islamic date is converted as follows: 1236 minus (1236 divided by this undignified fate was remedied by the efforts and perseverance of Lellos Demetriades, Mayor of Nicosia. Using volunteer workers and raising funds he supervised
the restoration, cleaning and preservation of this architectural heritage and restored it to its former glory. The gate consists of a large passageway and two halls, which are now used for exhibitions, lectures, conferences, film shows, concerts, theatrical performances, arts and crafts exhibitions as well as receptions. Since its restoration Famagusta Gate has been the city's popular Cultural Center and in September 1995 it housed the splendid exhibition "Caterina Cornaro, last Queen of
Cyprus".
