The monastery lies 25.6 km south of Stavros-tis-Psokas in the Paphos district. The icon is the work of the Cypriot iconographer Parthenios and dates from the first half of the 19th century. Apart from icons and relics, the monastery possesses a holy shroud dedicated to the Mother of God surnamed Chrysorroyiatissa and dated 1797. An 1801 engraving by John Cornaros, an eminent iconographer of Crete, depicts the story of Ignatius and the icon of the Virgin Mary believed to have been one of seventy icons painted by Saint Luke, and which he had found on the seashore of Paphos. Ignatius believed that the iconoclasts had cast the icon into the sea that it had miraculously turned up on the shores of Cyprus. Having produced sufficient documentation and witnesses, and with the support of the Cyprus government in 1998 (nearly ten years later), she won a decision of monetary compensation from the Turkish government, as well as the right to free access and resettlement. On December 3rd 2003, Turkey was ordered by the Council of Europe to pay C£1,100,000 (US$2,310,000, C£1=US$2.10) to Mrs. Titina Loizidou. The order by the Council of Europe followed the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Loizidou v Turkey. Turkey handed over a cheque for 1.2 million euros to the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Walter Schwimmer. Turkey had been refusing to comply with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for five years. Turkey has still to comply with the second part of the decision demanding Turkey to provide Mrs. Titina Loizidou free access and resettlement in her home in Kyrenia. Born in Nicosia in 1903 he obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy in 1934 from the University of Berlin where he had also studied ancient history and the Classics. Before that he had studied philology at the University of Athens. He served as Principal of the Pancyprian Gymnasium fort wenty-four years (1936-1960) and was founder of scientific societies and research centers, which were internationally recognized. In 1952 he was elected member of the Athens Academy and in 1969 was made Honorary Doctor of the University of Thessaloniki. He published several works including a ""Brief History of Cyprus"" (1964-1972) and ""History of Ancient Cyprus"". He was Minister of Education from 1965 to 1970. He died in 1976.
