He did not complete his elementary education and was orphaned at childhood. He went to work early in life and was taught hagiography. He grew up to be a multi-talented writer and a self-taught painter. He travelled extensively in Europe and the Middle East and lived frugally. Seferis and other personalities who came to know him spoke of him as being a writer, painter, poet, architect and hagiographer among other attributes. He wrote mainly short stories and novels. Among the books he published are: “Lives of men and flowers”, “The golden myth” and “Blue flower”. He was well known in the literary circles of Cyprus, Athens and Alexandria where he lived at different times. Critics and writers of his time had reservations and objections to his style of language and the manner in which he portrayed his characters. He never wanted to commercialize his art and accepted only minimal payment for his paintings some of which are in private collections in Cyprus. The iconostasis at Panagia Yiamatiki Church, Platres, Cyprus, was painted by him. Nicos Nicolaides died in 1956 in the Communal Hospital in Cairo. In the 1920s the municipalities of Lefkosia and Lemesos formed some sort of fire brigades which were very primitive compared to present day standards. Tasks were performed by untrained volunteer staff. Sometime later the Lefkosia Police Fire Brigade was organized in accordance with British Standards of the time and in 1935 it was reorganized introducing permanent staff who were given training. New fire fighting vehicles were brought into service. A fire station was also located next to Pafos Gate which serves Lefkosia to this day. At the outbreak of World War II fire fighting teams were established in all the cities. The Stavros and Platania forest stations in the Troodos mountains are two of the most important on the island. The tasks of the fire fighters include rescue from buildings, dams, major traffic and aviation accidents, fire fighting wherever fires arise on land, ships or aircraft, in forests or chemical installations etc.. The men and women are continually trained. The 50c stamp depicts a fire engine with turntable ladder which came into service in March 1959. It has a 4929 cm³ engine to extinguish fires and an external ladder that reaches 30 meters to scale high rise buildings. Ovoid in shape it has a thorny outer skin that needs to be carefully peeled using gloves to avoid having one’s hands covered with fine thorns. After 1878 it was cultivated in the Turkish quarters of the towns and in villages. Nowadays the shrubs can be found growing all over Cyprus in hedges, around fields and deserted lands. They form good hedges. The fruit is very refreshing during the hot summer months and is delicious when chilled. It ripens between August and December. In Greek it is called “Papoutsosiko” because its flat scale like leaves resemble a shoe. In due course the doctor won the Nobel Prize for his work. The first heart transplant was performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in 1957 in South Africa but the patient lived only 18 days and died of pneumonia. At the time anti-rejection drugs were very expensive, had side effects and their effectiveness was very poor. Since then the medical advancement in the transplantation of organs has been phenomenal. In Cyprus the first kidney transplant was performed in October 1986 by Dr. Giorgos Kyriakides at the Paraskevaides surgical and transplantation centre in Lefkosia. By 2010 some 879 transplant operations had been performed with a success rate of 88%. In 2010 the centre closed when a transplant centre became operational at the new Lefkosia General Hospital. New and more advanced methods were introduced that created especially to donors the possibility to recover within about four days and to return to work within approximately three weeks. The success rate achieved at the Lefkosia General Hospital is almost 100% which must be the envy of many a centre. In the Near East, Middle East and the Balkans where the Ottoman empire ruled for four centuries, folk dances are both similar and unique in more ways than one as they have been influenced by cross fertilization of traditions and customs. In Cyprus there is an abundance of folk melodies to which men and women dance separately and at times together. The Cyprus stamp depicts the “Pitcher Dance” reminiscent of the times when young women had to fetch water from the spring and hopefully meet a loved one. Another dance performed by young girls is the “Handkerchief dance”. It is recorded that in the early years of the 20th century young men in the village of Dali performed the wild dance of “the knife”. This is a reference to the dance of the butcher as he slaughters an animal,while the “sickle dance” imitates the reaping of the corn. Other well known dances are the “syrtos” and the “zeimbekikos”. On festive and special occasions the dancers both men and women are dressed in traditional garments that are richly and colourfully embroidered. Title A name given to the resource 400th Birth Anniverary of Rembrandt, Commemorative Ιssue Subject The topic of the resource Γραμματόσημα--Κύπρος--Ιστορία Postage stamps--Cyprus--History Description An account of the resource Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden, Holland on 15th July 1606. His father was a miller and his mother the daughter of a banker. In 1631 he went to Amsterdam as a young printmaker, painter and etcher and opened a workshop taking on numerous pupils. In the 1650s his etchings and prints earned him international recognition. The “Three Crosses”, one of his most famous etchings depicts Christ’s death on the cross when the gospels say the sun had darkened. As a painter he was highly skilled and versatile. He painted scenes from the bible and mythology and became well known for his portraits. In 1642 he painted his most acclaimed group portraiture known as the “Night Watch” which today has pride of place at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. The 40c stamp depicts one of his last self-portraits painted in 1669 and in the background is the painting of “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp 1632” which hangs at the Mauritshuis in the Hague. Rembrandt died on 4th October 1669 and was buried in an unknown grave in the Westerkerk. The vote to choose the hosts was held in 2000 in Zurich, Switzerland and the bidding countries were: Germany, England, South Africa and Morocco. Thirty two countries took part and the games were played at different stadiums. However the Olympiastadion with a capacity to hold 74,176 spectators was not used. In this tournament the youngest player was 17 years old and the oldest 37. Germany’s Miroslav Klose scored 5 goals and was able to claim the “Golden Boot”. The games set an unprecedented record of 345 yellow cards and 28 red cards being shown to players. Italy won for the 4th time by defeating France 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Title A name given to the resource 25th Anniversary, of the Postal Museum, Nicosia, Commemorative Ιssue Subject The topic of the resource Γραμματόσημα--Κύπρος--Ιστορία Postage stamps--Cyprus--History Description An account of the resource The Philatelic and Postal Museum opened its doors in Lefkosia in 1981. In 1999 the museum was renovated and its exhibitions enhanced. A letter box from rural postal service dating back to late 19th early 20th century, early postmen’s uniforms, scales, seals and a postman’s bicycle from times gone bye are displayed in adjoining rooms. In addition a visitor can also view all the stamps of Cyprus from 1880 to date and can browse through the early registers compiled by the then postmasters. These registers offer postal historians valuable information for their research in the early workings of the post office. The museum is situated at 3B Agiou Savva street in the old walled city of Lefkosia close to a number of historical churches that a visitor can reach on foot.
