An account of the resource
Agios Zenon was born to rich and aristocratic parents in the province of Ponto in Asia Minor. He enlisted in the army as a special courier of Emperor Flavius Valens ( 364-378 AD) whom he served with great devotion. He carried the Emperor’s messages and orders at non-stop gallops across dangerous routes as far as Armenia. This blind devotion to the Emperor may have been the reason for Valens’s convertion to Christianity. Because of this service he is associated with philately and postal administration.
On the death of the Emperor in 378, Agios Zenon resigned from the service to live as a hermit in a cave in Antioch for the rest of his life. People in the vicinity brought him food but he fetched his own water from a spring not so far away.
The beautiful purple colour of Agios Zenon’s frock comes from a gastropod (Mirex triremus) a sea snail that secretes a yellowish fluid which when boiled and treated makes a purple dye now used in Christian churches and which gave rise to the official colours of Cardinals.
Agios Zenon died in 417 AD and gave all his wealth to charity. He was elevated to sainthood for the virtues and godliness he exhibited till the end of his life.
According to John of Damascus, the images of saints and their relics were to be respected because the grace of the Holy Spirit, which inspired them during their lives, lingers round their earthly remains and portraits.

Τhe murals depicted on this set of three stamps originate from the Chapel of Agios Themonianus (a corruption of the name Agios Euphemianos) from the village of Lysi, now in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus. The Chapel lies a mile to the south of the village beside a cluster of eucalyptus trees. It is not known if the trees still exist).
From a dedicatory inscription it is surmised that the Chapel was a dependency of a long lost monastery the abbot of which had paid for its erection and for the paintings sometime in the 14th century.
The paintings were looted and the Chapel plundered after Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974. In 1983 a representative of the well known Menil Foundation Inc. of Texas found the paintings in a flat of a Turkish dealer in Munich. In a court case that ensued the Republic of Cyprus proved irrefutably that the murals came from the looted Chapel in Lysi. The Orthodox Church of Cyprus was recognized
as the legal owner of the murals and reached an agreement with the Menil Foundation whereby they would restore the works and hold them for a period of 15 years from 1st January 1986.
The 40c stamp depicts Christ Pantocrator, the Supplication, the Preparation of the Throne and the angels as installed in the Dome of the Chapel in Houston which was specifically built with the exact dimensions of the plundered Chapel.
The murals were repatriated to Cyprus in 2012 and are now held at Archbishop Makarios III Foundation in Lefkosia.

Τhe building known as the “Lyssiotis Mansion”, and situated on Makarios III Avenue, Lefkosia, is the work of architect Photiades. It was built in 1928-9 by Petros Aloneftis and given as dowry to his daughter Maria.
Its thin columns, noteworthy Ionic column capitals, arched verandas and vaulted windows give it a distinctive and impressive character. The poet Xanthos Lyssiotis lived and worked here.
In 1995 the building was bought by the National Bank of Greece (Cyprus). After restorations and renovations it currently houses the offices of the bank.
Τhe 40c stamp depicts one of the most significant neoclassical buildings in the centre of Pafos which reflect a unique beauty from yesteryears. Built in 1944-46 during the mayoralty of Christodoulos Galatopoulos, it was intended to house thousands of books and treasures of knowledge. The plans were laid by architect Andreas Christodoulides who also supervised the construction of this charming building.

Τhe year is 10,000 BC, the hunters are roaming the land in search of prey, whence did they come, we do not know, were they the ancestors of the Neolithic dwellers of Choirokitia settlement of 7000 BC, again we do not know. But at the excavated site of Aetokremmos at Akrotiri they left behind them the bones of a pigmy hippopotamus (Phanurios minitus) which stood about 75 cm. tall and 1.5 meters in length
and the stone tools which they must have used to carve it. No other traces of their existence have been found even though palaeontological excavations have uncovered the remains of unknown animals and birds that date back some 100,000 years
The second stamp in the first row shows a stone vessel from 7000 BC excavated at the Neolithic site of Kalavassos-Tenta. Its form and quality together with other finds suggests a settlement that enjoyed other pursuits apart from their daily needs. A necklace of faience beads from Kalavassos now at the Cyprus Museum attests to this.
The third stamp depicts the circular dwellings of a Neolithic settlement at Choirokitia. Here again we do not know where the inhabitants came from or why they vanished. But a stone and shell necklace 40cm. long that they left behind tells us that their women liked to adorn themselves.
The fourth stamp depicts a woman at the time of childbirth. It originates from the site of Kissonerga-Mosphilia, a settlement from the Chalcolithic period dating back to 3000 BC. Another terracotta nude female from this period can be found at the Louvre Museum.
Τhe first stamp in the second row shows a terracotta vessel from the early Bronze Age (2400-1900 BC). What is unusual about it is that it imitates a leather or cloth vessel with a deformation caused by the weight of its contents. It is kept at the Cyprus Museum.
The second stamp shows a rare bronze skewer with a Greek inscription dated to 1000 BC.The five inscribed symbols read the word “Opheltou” probably the name of the owner. It was discovered in a tomb in Kouklia. It is kept at the Cyprus Museum.
The third stamp shows a terracotta vessel shaped like a bird with a narrow orifice on the bird’s neck and a second in its beak as an outflow opening. It dates from the Cypro-geometric period (1050-750 BC)
The fourth stamp depicts the map of Cyprus in 1718 where the cartographer Pierre Moullart-Sanson endeavoured to delimit the borders of the ancient kingdoms that existed on the island during the first millennium BC. The map is in the collection of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation.

Τhe Social Insurance Scheme was first implemented in January 1957. It is compulsory to all legally employed and self-employed citizens of Cyprus who are eligible for social insurance.
The 1957 benefits included those for marriage and maternity, funeral rights, sickness and unemployment, old age, widow’s pension and orphans’ benefits. Substantial changes were implemented in 1964 and benefits became available for industrial accidents and occupational diseases. In 1973 a pension for incapacitated persons was introduced and the sickness pension was extended to cover the self-employed. Also unemployed sickness benefit for married women became available.
The 1974 invasion by Turkey necessitated the implementation of restrictive measures to safeguard the Scheme against the risk of bankruptcy. The levels were, however, restored in 1977.
1980 saw the introduction of the Proportional Social Insuance Scheme under which both contributions and benefits were linked to the income earned from work. The Scheme was rightfully characterized as the most important social policy measure ever effected in Cyprus.
In 2014 the government introduced the Guaranteed Minimum Welfare Scheme. The eligibility criteria are complex and are meant to ensure that only those in real need are supported.

The forerunner of the Treaty of Rome was the 1951 Treaty of Paris that created the European Coal and Steel Community. The idea
conceived by Jean Monet and announced by Robert Schuman, the French Foreign Minister, on 9th May 1950, was the pooling of Franco-German coal and steel production in order to strengthen their co-operation, reconstruct the economies of the European continent and banish the possibility of war.
The Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community is the International Agreement signed on 25th March 1957 by Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands and West Germany that led to the foundation of the European Economic Community on 1st January 1958. The Treaty proposed the creation of a common market of goods, services, workers and capital within the EEC’s member states as well as common transport and agricultural policies. Furthermore it established The European Social Fund and the European Commission.
The Treaty of Rome had several Renaming and Amendments as in the Maastricht Treaty of 1993 and the Treaty of Lisbon 2009. In March 2011 the European Council amended the Treaty to enable the establishment of the Financial Stability Mechanism for the Eurozone.

Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell (Lord), British General and founder of the Boy Scout Movement in 1908 and in 1910 with his sister Agnes, the Girl Guides, was born in London in 1857 and died in 1941.
The world committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement had fixed August 1st 1907 as the starting date of the Movement, as on that day Baden Powell had organized a ten-day camp which led Scouting to spread across the British Empire and other countries of the world.
Boys and girls, men and women irrespective of class can take part for Scouting’s common principles are faith in God and the homeland and love for their fellow beings.
In Cyprus, Scouting is the oldest and most important youth organization creating moral and virtuous citizens. Today there are more than 30 million active members in more than 200 countries. The organization is represented at the United Nations
and the Council of Europe.
The Scout Law: I swear on my honour that I will do my best to carry out my duty to God and my country, to help other people at all times and to obey the Scout Law.

Motorcyclists are fascinated by the technology, performance and innovations on their machines and they take great pride in keeping them in immaculate condition.
T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia was a great enthusiast. His first motorcycle was a Triumph with a sidecar. Later he bought several “Brough Superior” models including the BSAWM20-1940 which is one of the most renowned models of its time and was used by the British forces during World War ΙΙ. It forms part of world history.

Echinodermata are among many wonders of the sea and are part of the exotic marine life on our planet. There are some 7000 known species of echinodermata. Anyone may have seen a star fish on the beach but none can live on land or in fresh water. The majority live at the bottom of the sea and can creep from place to place. Few can swim and float. The star fish is a predator and is common in shallow waters.
All echinoderms are creatures with body constructions which point outwards from the centre of the body like spikes in a wheel. They occur in multiples of five but some exceptions exist. On the underside of a sea star one can see hundreds of tiny feet arranged into several rows on each ray. These so called tube feet are filled with sea water and can help them to capture and hold prey, or hold onto rocks in a swift current.
Echinoderms’ reproduction is by external fertilization. Eggs and sperm are freely discharged into the water and while some sea urchins brood their eggs in special pouches, most do not provide parental care.
Echinodermata are interesting and fascinating animals with amazing adaptability.

In 2006 the Holy Church of Agiou Eleftheriou, a dependency of Machairas monastery in Lefkosia, celebrated the bicentenary of its construction. The church, hidden from the sights of passers by on Onasagoras street in the old walled city of Lefkosia, was built in secret in 1806 when Ottoman rule forbade the building of churches. It lies three feet below street level and is surrounded by houses. A visitor stands in awe before its walls that are covered with frescoes from Byzantine times.
What distinguishes the Holy Church of Agiou Eleftheriou is the authentic copy of the image of the Virgin Mary of Machairas, the original of which had been saved and kept in the church when fire had threatened and gutted the greater part of Machairas monastery in 1892.
Another characteristic of the church is the manner in which the icons have been placed in the iconostasis. The icon of the Virgin is mounted on the right of the sanctuary door instead of the left, as otherwise the Virgin would have had her back turned to Christ whose icon is mounted on the left. The iconostasis which dates from 1868 has twelve icons from the 19th and 20th centuries. The icon of Agios Eleftherios was donated by Archbishop Kyprianos of Cyprus who was martyred by the Ottomans in 1821.
Church services are held on Sundays but during weekdays the gates on the street are closed unless a priest from the monastery of Machairas is present. A special service is held on 15th December on the name day of Agios Eleftherios.
