Louis Braille was born in Coupvray, France in 1809. He was blind from the age of three but this did not deter him from joining the Institution of the Young Blind in Paris when he was ten years old. He studied organ playing and became professor of the Institute in 1826.
Aware of the difficulties that blind people encountered, he devised in1829 a system of raised-point writing that enabled these people to both read and write.
As an educationalist and inventor he is the greatest benefactor of blind people. He died in 1852.

Ιn November 1909 the first co-operative society was formed in the now Turkish occupied village of Lefkonico. Gradually new institutions came into being both in the countryside, towns and cities. Their original aim was the protection of family income and the fight against usury.
The Turkish invasion of 1974 had devastating consequences which led to 225 co-operative institutions being displaced or inactivated as well as the loss of all their properties.
Since then the primary responsibility has been the smooth and effective operation of the societies and the development,
improvement, expansion and upgrading of services in the sectors of: Credit & Savings, Consumer needs, Trade in agricultural products, Manufacturing, Insurance and others. The most developed sector of the co-operative movement is that of Credit and Savings. In 2003 this sector had deposits of Cyprus Pounds amounting to 4 billion and loans of 3 billion.

In finalizing the Economic and Monetary Union, the European Union introduced on 1st January 1999 the Euro as a new virtual currency. On 1st January 2002 the Euro coins and banknotes were put into circulation and by 2014 eighteen countries from the European Union had adopted the Euro as their national currency.
The Euro stands alongside the U.S. Dollar and the Pound Sterling as a world reserve currency. The Persian King Darius I (521-486 BC) had organized the first world currency, called “Daric”.
Throughout history coin and banknote portraitures have been used to promote and perpetuate the memory of personalities, political events or moral virtues, or simply express an imperial authority such as in the Cyprus coins and banknotes that depict Queen Victoria or her successors.
The Roman Emperor Augustus called himself “Son of God” and this inscription appeared on his coinage. In 43 AD Emperor Claudius had a silver coin minted at Caesarea in modern Turkey to celebrate his conquest of Britain. In 1999 China issued a 50 yuan banknote bearing the image of Chairman Mao.

All the icons of the Christmas set originate from the Church of Panagia Katholiki which stands in the middle of the village of Pelendri. They date from the very early 16th century. The village lies south east of the village of Kato Amiandos in the Troodos mountains.
The 68c stamp depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child on her left arm while Christ himself is raising his right hand in a gesture of benediction. In his left hand he is holding a parchment roll.
Together with the icons of Archangels Gabriel and Michael, they form part of the eleven icons on the epistyle of the iconostasis. All the icons are executed in the Italo-Byzantine style. ( Andreas & Judith Stylianou, The Painted Churches of Cyprus )

The centuries 750-475 BC are referred to as the Archaic Period in the history of Cyprus, but in fact they were years of prosperity with between seven and ten kingdoms flourishing in cities such as Salamis, Kition, (Citium), Kourion (Roman Curium), Amathus, Marion and Idalion.
The stamp depicts a silver stater of king Evelthon of Salamis who was the first to mint his own coinage. At the time all the city kingdoms paid tribute to their overlords be they Egyptians, Assyrians or Persians.
The second stamp in the first row depicts an ancient ship from the Archaic Period which saw Cypriot civilization reach an unprecedented peak with growing trade between its neighbours and imperial powers competing for the supply of timber for ship building. During 200 years of Ptolemic rule Cyprus remained an important and wealthy part of the Egyptian empire and its most famous of ship builders in the early 3rd century BC was Pyrcoteles of Pafos.
The third stamp depicts The Athenian General Kimon who captured the city kingdom of Marion in 449 BC. He mounted several attempts to liberate Cyprus from Persian rule and even though he defeated them off Salamis, the expedition was recalled when he suddenly died from the plague. Cyprus remained under Persian rule.
The fourth stamp depicts the Tombs of the Kings. Driving a short distance to the north of Pafos a visitor will encounter this historical site where actually no kings were ever buried. With one hundred tombs the site is, however, very impressive. Traces of stucco and frescoes suggest the walls may have been decorated sometime in the past. Dating from the 3rd century BC for use by prominent families of Pafos, the site was included in the World Heritage List in 1980.
The first stamp in the second row depicts a coin of Alexander the Great. In 333 BC the Cypriot kings changed sides to support Alexander and after the defeat of the Persian forces at the battle of Issus, the kings transferred their allegiance to Alexander and consequently became part of the Hellenistic world.
The second stamp depicts St. Paul who in 45 AD on his first missionary journey from Antioch arrived in Cyprus where he succeeded in converting the Roman Proconsul Sergius Paulus to Christianity.
The third stamp depicts the bust of the Roman Emperor Septimus Severus (193-211 AD) whose over life size bronze statue was found at Kythrea. It stands 2.08 meters high and is now in the Cyprus Museum in Lefkosia.
The fourth stamp depicts Emperor Zeno who in 488 AD confirmed the autocephaly of the Cyprus Church and granted extraordinary privileges to the Archbishop. These included the carrying of a scepter instead of a pastoral staff and the signing of his name in red ink.

Αlthough Cyprus joined the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie as an associate member only in 2006, its French connection dates back to the 12th century when Frankish Crusaders established the Lusignan kingdom (1192-1489) and became the outermost bastion of Europe in the Eastern Mediterranean; a role that applies to the present day.
The French connection since then has never been interrupted and today we still have the St. Joseph Convent in Larnaka and the St. Joseph School in Lefkosia. Both have contributed immensely in the fields of education and medicine. In fact the French nurse Sophie Gambon was honoured by a memorial in the grounds of the convent in Larnaka for her unflinching devotion over a period of 23 years
from 1871 to 1894.
The 12th Francophonie Summit of the Heads of State and Government using French as a common language was held in Quebec City, Canada, in October 2008. The OIF consists of 68 countries in the five continents, 14 of which are in the European Union. Their common objectives among others are the promotion of democracy, protection of cultural heritage and promotion of linguistic diversity.

Αccording to mythology the Olympic Games originated in a foot race run by girls for the privilege of becoming the priestess of the Moon Goddess Hera and a second foot race was run by young men for the dangerous privilege of becoming the priestess’consort. The games were in fact a pagan festival held in Olympia in honour of Zeus, King of the Olympian Gods, and it was Hercules who established the four year Olympic festival that came to be called “Olympiad”. The first was held in 776 BC.
Hercules having brought the wild olive from the Hyperboreans to Olympia, he ordained that the Aetolian umpire should crown the victors with its leaves which were to be their only reward. (Robert Graves, Greek Myths pp.178,179,491,492)
In 68 AD the Roman Emperor Nero was in Greece to perform his songs and compete in the chariot races in the Olympic Games which he won even though he fell out of his chariot. (Simon S. Montefiore, Jerusalem, page 124)
The Olympic symbol of five rings first appeared in 1908 while the Olympic torch was introduced in 1936. The XXIX Olympiad since 1896 was held in Beijing, China, from 8th to 24th August 2008, and Cyprus was participating for the eighth consecutive time since 1964.
The official logo for the games was titled “Dancing Beijing” which featured a stylized calligraphic character “Jing” meaning capital and referring to the host city.The games were held in 37 venues. The centre piece, the National Stadium, was nicknamed “The Bird Nest” because of its most unusual design. The opening and closing ceremonies and all athletic competitions were held there.
10,942 athletes took part in 28 sports and 302 events. 43 world records and 132 olympic records were set. The Chinese athletes won 51 gold medals and the United States accumulated he highest total of 110 medals. Cyprus athletes participated in the sailing, high jump, tennis and shooting events.

Ιn 1969 the Society of Cypriot Studies was founded and the first International Congress of Cypriot Studies was held. The aim of the Society is to study and promote the archaeological, historical, philological and cultural heritage of Cyprus from prehistoric times and covering the Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Ottoman periods but not excluding the more recent history.
The 4th International Cyprological Congress, held between 29th April and 3rd May 2008, was attended by some 350 researchers from all continents thus proving the huge scientific interest shown with regards Cyprus’ contribution to world civilization and its promotion by the Society.
A notable contribution of the Society is its preservation of the popular theatre of Karaghiozis, many of whose figurines were collected and are now preserved in the Museum of Arts.

The Anemone coronaria is just one of more than 1150 species of wild flowers that are found in all regions of the island. Anemones come in a variety of delicate hues from pink to red, turquoise blue and white. They grow up to 30cm. high.
In springtime trekkers who are adventurous enough to tackle a 12 kilometer “Potamos Trail” in Pafos will be rewarded with dazzling sights and hillsides colourfully carpeted with anemones, poppies and orchids. Walkers and cyclists exploring Cape Greco National Forest Park will come across anemones unfurling their petals in the joys of sunshine.
Legend has it that Ares who had grown jealous of Aphrodite, disguised himself as a wild boar and killed her lover Adonis. Anemones sprang from the drops of his blood. (Robert Graves, the Greek Myths, Vol.1 page 74).

Αphrodite (meaning sea born) Goddess of love is one of the twelve Gods in Greek mythology, but she is also Venus in Roman, and Anahid in Armenian mythologies. She is also known as Ishtar or Astarte, the sea-goddess, ruler of men and who has temples all along the Palestinian coast.
Aphrodite was also known as the Moon Goddess whose sacred bird was the sparrow. She was often involved in the lives of lesser gods and mortal men such as Paris whom she made to fall in love with Helen whose face launched a thousand ships and led to the Trojan war.
Pygmalion had fallen in love with Aphrodite and because she would not lie with him, his father made an ivory image of her and laid it in his bed, praying to her for pity. Entering into the image, Aphrodite brought it to life as Galatea who bore him Paphus and Metharme. Paphus was the father of Cinyras who founded the city of Pafos and built a famous temple to Aphrodite there. (Robert Graves, Greek Myths, page 200).
The cycle of Venus’ movement between the western and eastern horizons, as in the evening and morning star, is taken as a guarantee of the world’s continuing existence in time. (Richard Cavendish, Mythology, page 245).
