Α long long time ago farm animals including the cow were domesticated by man to provide him with sustenance in his daily life. In the early days of farming cows were used to pull the plough in addition to providing man with milk and meat for nourishment. Farm girls employed to milk the cows often contracted cowpox. The virus that causes this disease in cows was used to develop a vaccine against the highly contagious human disease known as smallpox and which has since been eradicated.
The worldwide demand for milk and meat has resulted in cows being crammed into barren pens, standing around motionless, waiting to be fed or milked or even be injected with antibiotics. Selective breeding, specialized diets and growth hormones are used to increase milk production which in turn shorten the lives of these animals who never go out to graze.
People are now turning to organically produced milk and meat and in Holland it is still a pleasure to see cattle grazing in the fields.

After 82 years of British rule, on 15th August 1960, the Union Jack was lowered from Government House for the last time. Archbishop Makarios III was President and Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Fazil Kuchuck Vice President. Sir Hugh Foot, last Governor of Cyprus, signed the agreements by which he surrendered his authority to the leaders of the Republic of Cyprus. The flag of the newly established State was hoisted on Government House and all public buildings in Cyprus.
In July 1974, after the Greek Junta in Greece staged a coup to overthrow the Government of President Makarios, Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied 37% of the land. Britain, Greece and Turkey failed in their obligations and undertakings to uphold the independence and sovereignty of the Republic.
On 1st May 2004, Cyprus officially acceded as a full member of the European Union. In April 2003, the then President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, had signed the Treaty of Accession.
On January 1st 2008, Cyprus adopted the “Euro” as its currency and the country entered a new era in its history. As full member of the European Union, Cyprus joined a family of nations dedicated to promoting peace, friendship, respect for Human Rights, protection of the environment and unity among its diverse people.

Τhe fresco depicting the Birth of Christ originates from the small Church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Vyzakia. The church contains one of most interesting series of wall paintings of the 16th century all of which introduce Venetian iconographical elements. The paintings are highly expressive but naïve. Note the shepherd at the lower left hand side; he looks more like an actor straight out of some play.
A visitor to the Church can marvel at some sixteen paintings that have survived the passage of centuries.

Established in 1959, the European Court of Human Rights adjudicates on individual and State applications alleging violations of civil and political rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.
The court is based in Strasbourg in the Human Rights building the image of which is well known worldwide. Since 1998 the court has delivered more than 10,000 judgements which are binding on all concerned. The Court’s Case Law makes the convention a powerful living instrument in dealing with new challenges and consolidates the rule of law and democracy in Europe.
Forty seven Council of Europe Member States including Cyprus have ratified the Convention.

The Church of Agia Paraskevi, in the old village of Geroskipou in the Pafos district, is a three aisled vaulted basilica of five domes. It is the earliest example of this type of church in Cyprus and it embodies the characteristics of the early phase of the middle Byzantine Period. The original church had a cruciform plan.
The frescoes in the eastern dome have a uniconical decoration dating to the second half of the 9th century. Other frescoes date from the 10th to the 15th centuries. There is also an unusual icon that is painted on both sides.
Another medieval building with five domes is the Church of Agioi Barnabas and Hilarion in the village of Peristerona which dates back to the 16th century.
The second stamp in the first row is a 1735 drawing of the monastery of Agios Chrysostomos Koutsoventis (1090-1100 AD) by the Russian monk Vassili Barsky.The chapel housed frescoes of Byzantine art. The monastery is currently occupied by the Turkish forces.
The third stamp depicts the Coat-of Arms of the Lusignan Kings of Jerusalem, Cyprus and Armenia. King Peter I of Cyprus 1358-1369 AD also held the title of King of Armenia 1368-1369 AD. The Lusignans reigned from 1192 to 1489 AD.
The fourth stamp depicts the Chronicle of Leontios Machairas written between 1426 and 1432, concerning the “Sweet Land of Cyprus”.
The first stamp in the second row shows Caterina Cornaro, the last Queen of Cyprus ceding the island to the Venetians in 1489. Her husband Lusignan King James II had died in 1473.
The second stamp depicts the Venetian fortifications of the walled city of Nicosia. They were constructed between 1567 and 1570 but had not been completed when the Turkish forces under the command of Lala Mustapha Pasha had besieged the city.
The third stamp depicts the siege of Lefkosia in 1570 when after 45 days the walls were breached by the Ottoman army.
The fourth stamp depicts the surviving part of the Larnaka Aqueduct built in 1746 by Pasha Abu Bakr, Ottoman governor of Cyprus. It had cost him personally more than 50,000 piastres.

Τhe wild red jungle fowl is the ancestor of today’s chickens, which like all birds are smart and have communication skills. The term “pecking order” was coined by the Norwegian biologist Thorlief Schjelderup-Ebbe after observing that chickens enforced their leadership by delivering a sharp peck on the back of underlings to remind them of their place in the hierarchy. A dominant rooster would crow to emphasize that he is master of his territory and would place himself at risk in order to warn his mate or offspring of looming danger.
In years gone bye many families raised chickens in their backyards, a custom that has vanished from many parts of the western world. With the increased demand for chicken meat and eggs, chicken farms have been established in many countries but the overcrowding living conditions for these factory farmed birds are awful thus leading to infections and the slaughter of thousands of them that never reach our dining tables.

Founded on 5th December 1959 by thirty five founding members, the Cyprus Philatelic Society continues to prosper, promoting philately in Cyprus and abroad, encouraging philatelic research, guiding and helping young people to appreciate philately and dissipating the history and culture of Cyprus through its stamps.
The Society is a founder member of the European Philatelic Federation and since 1987 is a full member of the International Philatelic Federation. Throughout all these years the Society and its members have participated and exhibited at international and local levels and have won many awards including gold, silver and bronze medals.
In Cyprus, the Society arranges special programs and competitions to promote and spread philately in schools while Cyprus Post has on two occasions invited school children to compete in designing Christmas stamps which were then issued.

Τhese games are held every second year and European states with a population of less than a million are eligible to participate. The first games were held in San Marino in Italy in 1985 and Cyprus held the games for the first time in 1989.
The XIII games were again held in Cyprus in June 2009. The opening ceremony at the new GSP stadium was officially opened by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr.Dimitris Christofias. A world premiere composed by David Foster was performed by the tenor Marios Frangoulis.
Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and San Marino participated with some 1500 athletes competing for a host of medals. The disciplines were: Athletics, Basketball, Gymnastics, Judo, Mountain biking, Sailing (with 16 medal events), Shooting, Swimming, Tennis, Table tennis and Volleyball. Lemesos hosted the Beach Volleyball, gymnastics, sailing and swimming while Mountain biking was held at the National Park of Machairas at an average altitude of 700 meters.
Cyprus amassed a total of 139 medals of which 59 were gold, 47 silver and 33 bronze and coming first in the winners’ list.
The Cyprus Olympic Committee has been instrumental in the institutionalization of the games.

Αt the instigation of UNESCO and the “International Union of Geological Sciences”, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the “International Year of Planet Earth” and the three years 2007-2009 to be a period of international actions.
Earth and the planets circling our sun were formed some 4.6 billion years ago when gas and dust collapsed. Earth is situated in the Milky Way galaxy which until the first two decades of the 20th century was thought to be the entire universe.
The expanse of the Milky Way stretches some 50,000 light years and light travels at 186,000 miles per second. Only 400 million years ago did Earth’s surface evolve to a strikingly modern appearance where green forests were populated by casts of insects and other creatures.
The search for earth-like planets has intensified in the past thirty years because we long to know if we are or are not alone in this vast timeless cosmos. So far more than 1700 planets have been identified orbiting other stars. The exoplanet Gliese 581g discovered in autumn 2010 is neither hot nor cold, thus challenging scientists and theorists to think about extraterrestrial life.
In the 3rd century BC Eratosthenes, the father of geography, calculated the girth of the earth which was correct to within 50 miles.
The earth takes 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes and 45.96768 seconds to circle around the sun.

Βeyond the Milky Way astronomers have located many galaxies and one of these is the Andromeda galaxy which together with our own is located in a space cluster that includes the large Megellanic cloud and the small Megellanic cloud. This cluster extends to a distance of 2,000,000 light years. The distance covered by one light year is close to six trillion miles. The oldest ever identified galaxy is thought to be 13.6 billion light years from earth. Such distances are so astronomical that they are impossible to comprehend.
When primitive man observed the heavens he could never have imagined the vastness of the universe with its billions of stars and galaxies. In 1983
the known universe extended to 20,000,000,000 light years. Caleb Scharf writing in the Scientific American of August 2014 tells us that or galaxy
is but one of an estimated hundred billion such structures in the observable universe- a volume that now stretches in all directions from us for more than 270,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles.
Today astronomers speak of multiple universes while others contemplate landing human beings on Mars. Mankind is reaching out for the heavens and is now seeking out the first moments of cosmic creation.
Robert Browning wrote: “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for ?”.
