For many centuries Cyprus has been a stepping stone for diverse peoples and cultures resulting in a unique architectural heritage. A visitor can explore the Roman mosaics of a once sumptuous Roman residence while Gothic, Venetian, Ionic and Ottoman architecture still exist around the island. In Lefkosia and other cities British Colonial architecture abounds with many historical buildings that have their own stories to tell. The Colonial Larnaka Customs Houses now make up the city’s Municipal Cultural Center.
It is therefore not impossible for any visitor no matter where his interests lie, to have a memorable and rewarding holiday.

An account of the resource
The 51c stamp depicts sunset at Paphos harbour with its medieval castle in the background. It reminds one of the Assyrian King Sargon II who referred to Cyprus as: “The land in the sea of the setting sun”. Paphos castle has been a declared Ancient Monument since 1935 and a UNESCO World Heritage List monument, along with other monuments of the archaeological park of Paphos, since 1980. It is located in the harbour area of Paphos town and its main role was to control the gateway of the port and provide defence against any hostile troops . Most scholars agree upon the mid-/late-14th century as its date of erection by the Frankish ruling family of the Lusignans, despite there being no solid and reliable testimonies regarding any fortification works carried out between the earthquake of 1222 and the invasion of the Genoese in 1373. Its importance lies in the symbolic meaning as the most prominent and dominant archaeological monument of Paphos and therefore it is considered a landmark for tourists and the town itself.
The castle adorns several types of media such as photographs, postcards, postage stamps and gravures. Today the castle is open to the public to visit as a sightseeing.

The Latin name of the jasmine flower is: Jasminum grandiflorum. It is an easy to grow climber producing beautiful clusters of starry white or yellow flowers that one can smell from feet away. The buds have a stronger smell than the flowers. Well known varieties include the Primrose jasmine, the Italian jasmine and the Winter jasmine.
Jasmine is also used to make tea and syrup while its essential oils go in the production of other fragrances.

The jasmine is a tropical sweet smelling flower renowned for its ornamental beauty and distinctive fragrance. It is indigenous to warm climates throughout Asia, Europe and Africa. The plants may be vines or bushes and some are evergreen.
In Cyprus the jasmine is cultivated as an ornamental plant in private and public gardens. It can survive at an altitude up to 1000 meters.

Football, the most popular game watched by millions the world over is believed to have descended from the ancient Greek game of Harpaston which is frequently mentioned in classical literature.
It seems it was first mentioned in England in 1170 when an account described youths going to the fields for a game of ball. Variations of the game are also documented in Egyptian and Greek societies proving that the sport has a long tradition throughout history.
In the 1800s football was picked up as a sport in seven public schools in England. A meeting at Cambridge in 1848 drew up the rules outlining goal kicks, throw-ins and goalkeeper’s rights which apply to this day. Over the years the game spread across the world and the first ever match outside Europe was played in Argentina in 1867.
September 8th 1888 was the first day of English Football League matches but the points system had not been finalized yet.
An unusual event occurred on Christmas eve 1914 when upon hearing German troops singing carols, both sides walked on to no man’s land and played a game of football. It goes to show how true football unites supporters and brings nations together, overriding cultural differences and creating an exciting camaraderie.

Τhe London 2012 Olympic Games known as the XXX Olympiad were held from 25th July to 12th August.
At the Opening Ceremony more than 10,000 athletes from 204 countries participated. London had been selected as the host city on 6th July 2005 at the IOC session in Singapore where it defeated bids from Moscow, New York city, Madrid and Paris. London became the first city to hold the games three times in the games’ modern history. It had previously hosted the games in 1908 and 1948.
The Cyprus Olympic Committee had sent the nation’s smallest team since 1988, with 13 athletes, 9 men and 4 women who competed in 7 sports. Marcos Baghdatis, Cyprus’ tennis player who some years back was ranked 8th in the world, was the country’s flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony.
Cyprus left London with the first Olympic Silver medal won by Pavlos Kontides in the men’s Laser (sailing) event.

Looking at the magnificent breeds of horses we have, it would be hard for anyone to believe that they evolved from multi-toed dwarf creatures that lived some 55 million years ago. These days a horse measuring less than 147cm at maturity is considered to be a pony.
Over many thousands of years, man has by selective breeding determined the shape, colour, size and the task for which a horse is bred. There are many breeds such as the Andalusian, known for its docility and the Arab for its gracefulness. At Tübengen University in Germany, one can see mankind’s earliest work of art, a 35,000 years old wild horse made from mammoth ivory.
The Hyskos introduced the horse into Egypt after 1800 BC and by 1600 BC they were being used in war with chariots. In the Tell-el-Amarna letters they are mentioned as imported to Egypt from Mesopotamia and Cyprus. In the 144th Olympiad in 204 BC a Cypriot from Karpasia named Ariston was the champion rider in the “Mature Riding Horses” class.
Ιn China, horses were highly valued because of the superiority of cavalry over infantry in war. In 101 BC the Emperor Wu in the Chinese capital of Chang’an composed the following poem/hymn while awaiting the arrival of more than thirty superior horses from a successful military campaign:
The Heavenly horses are coming Coming from the West They crossed the flowing sands For the barbarians are conquered.

Τhe mural depicting the Birth of Christ comes from the Cathedral of Agios John the Theologian, in Lefkosia, the foundation stone of which was laid on 30th April 1662 by Archbishop Niceforos. The church is built in an area where an earlier monastery existed during the Frankish Period (1192-1489) and records indicate that it existed in 1345.
The mural, situated after the second transverse arch,is in the first row of the Christological cycle that begins with the Annunciation and followed by the Nativity, and the Circumcision and ends in the fourth row with the Flagellation and the Via Crusis.(Vassilia Gregoriou, A Guide to St. John’s Cathedral, Lefkosia)

Αesop, (6th century BC) was a Greek legendary fabulist. The Roman poet Phaedrus popularized Aesop’s fables in the 1st century AD and in 1668 La Fontaine immortalized the stories when he re-wrote them in splendid verse.
The story of the Hare and the Tortoise is one of the best known of Aesop’s fables. When the hare ridiculed the tortoise for its slow movements, the tortoise replied by challenging the hare to a race. The hare burst out laughing but accepted the challenge.
The fox gave the signal to set off the race. The hare was off like a shot but the tortoise began walking slowly at a steady pace. The hare seeing that the tortoise was far behind, felt so sure of himself and victory that he lay down under a tree and fell asleep. When the hare eventually woke up he saw that the tortoise had already reached the finishing line. He had lost the race.
All Aesop’s fables have a moral to convey and this one tells us that he who is modest in life achieves his goals in the end.

Christopher Pissarides was born in 1948 in Lefkosia. After graduating from the Pancyprian Gymnasium, he continued his studies at the University of Essex and subsequently obtained his PhD from the London School of Economics.
In 2010 he became the first Cypriot to be awarded a Nobel Prize. Together with his colleagues Dale T. Mortensen and Peter Diamond they shared the prize in economic sciences “for their analysis of markets with search frictions”. Peter Diamond had analysed the foundation of search markets whilst Pissarides and Mortensen had expanded and applied the theory to the labour market. Their work allows us to understand and analyse how unemployment, job vacancies, job creations and wages are affected by economic policies and regulations. Pissarides’ book “Equilibrium Unemployment Theory” is the acknowledged standard reference book on the subject.
Christopher Pissarides is currently President of the National Economic Council reporting directly to the President of the Republic of Cyprus and a professor of economics at the LSE. (London School of Economics)
