In 30 AD, at a time of growing unrest and Jewish resistance to Roman rule, Jesus enters Jerusalem and proceeds to face the High Priests
of the Temple.
Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, riding a donkey, is an expression of humility which in today’s materialistic world is almost non-existent. In the scene, Christ and his disciples are advaning from the right while a crowd is welcoming Christ at the gates of the city with the rotunda of the Holy Sepulcher in the background.
The icon which is painted on canvas originates from the Church of Panagia Chrysaliniotissa in Lefkosia. It is currently housed at the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation Museum. In 1937, David Talbot Rice was able to discern the date to 1546 AD.

Τhe Cyprus Scouts Association (C.S.A.) was founded in 1913 by N. K. Lanitis and N. Nikolaides with the help they received from the United Kingdom. It is the oldest youth organization in Cyprus. In 1961 the C.S.A. became a member of the World Scout Movement and it plays an active part in national, regional and international Scouting events.
The Scout movement is open to all boys and girls including those in the Sovereign Base Areas. They are active in all aspects of the social and cultural life of Cyprus. In 1980, the World Scout Committee awarded Savvas Kokkides the “Bronze Wolf”, the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, for exceptional services to World Scouting.
In 2006 the members worked to assist with the refugee crisis caused by the war in Lebanon and one center accommodated 106 children who had been separated from their parents.
The Cyprus Scout Association has about 6000 active members within 54 Scout Goups.

Archbishop, Ethnarch and first President of the Republic of Cyprus, Makarios III was an eloquent orator with an imposing personality. He was born Michael Mouskos on 13th August 1913 in the village of Panayia in Pafos and he was admitted to Kykko monastery as a novice
monk when he was very young. In 1948 he was elected Metropolitan Bishop of Kitium and two years later Archbishop of Cyprus.
His tenure as President was far from harmonious for he led a newly independent country whose citizens had many misgivings about the constitution that had been thrust upon them. Christopher Hitchens, in his book “Hostage to History, Cyprus from the Ottomans to Kissinger, page 50”, wrote: “Cyprus got its independence unnecessarily late and under very trying and onerous conditions. Archbishop Makarios was right when he said that the agreement had created a state but not a nation”.
As President, Makarios saw the flare up of hostilities between the Greek and Turkish populations and the gradual separation of the two communities. He had his enemies who were plotting his removal and in March 1970 his helicopter was shot down as it lifted from the Αrchbishop’s Palace.
He survived the assassination attempt. Four years later, in 1974, the Greek Junta in Greece organized a coup to topple him; he managed to escape but the door was left open for Turkey to invade Cyprus and grab 37% of the land.
Makarios died on 3rd August 1977 of a broken heart.

Sixty four years ago the Red Cross was founded and today it is the largest humanitarian organization in Cyprus. In February 2012 it was admitted as the 188th member of the International Movement, and in recognition of this momentous event, Cyprus Post issued this 22c stamp.
The biggest project of the Cyprus Red Cross is the children’s Convalescent Home in Lemesos where children with serious disabilities are cared for. The organization is active in many spheres of the people’s daily lives, supporting and caring for the poor, the sick and the disabled who are provided with wheelchairs when necessary and free of charge.
The organization has undertaken projects in Sri Lanka such as the building of a hospital, the construction of a community clinic in Karatoula in the Peloponnese and the building of two ambulance centers in Gaza.
The Cyprus Red Cross never ceases to be caring, offering its services to all without discriminations, helping in times of crisis and always ready to give a hand in organizing First Aid lessons or blood donations.

Pavlos Kontides was born in Lemesos, a sea port town from ancient times, so it comes as no surprise that he took up sailing from the tender age of nine.
His venture into competitive sailing began in 2007. He represented Cyprus at the Beijing Olympics attaining a respectable 13th place. He won gold at the World Junior Championships. In 2009 he won two Silver medals in World Cups and a Bronze in the Paneuropean Men’s Championships.
His crowning moment came when, competing in the Laser Category at the London 2012 Olympic Games, he won his and Cyprus’ first Silver medal and earned a well deserved place in the island’s sporting history.
He is an inspirational example to all young Cypriot athletes.

The miniature sheet depicts an interesting icon of Italian workmanship with the Blessed Virgin Mary shown full face seated on a marble throne, holding the Child Christ and supported by Agios Georgios on her left and Agios Nikolaos on her right.
At the foot from the left hand corner are the portraits of the chief priest Georgios and his family from Vatyli. His son Aliozios together with his cousin Georgios hold an open book on the pages of which are written the names of members of the family and the date of their deaths between 1532 and 1604. According to local legend the icon was brought back to Cyprus by the chief priest who had visited Italy.
The Church of Agios Georgios at Vatyli was so completely restored in 1856 that only a fragment of the original medieval structure survives. The Church is in the occupied part of the island.
The icon survived the looting and destruction after the Turkish invasion of 1974 because it was housed at the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation since its return from an exhibition abroad.

Both icons were among many items that were looted after the Turkish invasion of 1974 and only after a great deal of effort by the Republic of Cyprus and the Church were they repatriated from Germany in November 2008.
The 51c stamp depicts the Guiding Virgin (Panagia Odigitria) from the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lysi. The icon is attributed to Chrysanthos of Ayios Eraklidios School and dates from the late 18th century.
The 22c stamp depicts the Virgin holding the Child Christ and seated on a wooden throne. It originates from the Christ Antiphonitis Church in the village of Kalogrea in the district of Keryneia. It is dated between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century.

Aesop’s fables have fascinated generations of children and the story of the Cricket and the Ant is yet another one with a moral content.
The Cricket and the Ant lived in a forest not far from each other. Throughout the summer the Cricket ate and sang all day and everyday while the Ant was busy collecting food to store in readiness for the winter that was to come.
Soon winter was upon them and the Cricket, cold, hungry and without shelter had no strength left to search for food. He called upon his neighbour the Ant to give him some food as all the leaves had gone and there was no food to be found anywhere. The Ant asked the Cricket as to what he was doing all through summer, to which he replied that he had been singing all day out of happiness and thus had no time to collect and store food. Well, replied the Ant, since you were singing during the summer, it is now time for you to dance, and with these words he shut the door and left him out in the cold.
The moral of the story is to be prepared for the future knowing what needs may arise.

Τhe Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus had organized “A National Day Reception- Cypriot Gastronomic Delights”,
held on 1st October 2012 at the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm.
The reception was to mark Independence Day of the Republic of Cyprus and to simultaneously promote Cypriot food, wines and gastronomic delicacies.
On 4th December 2012, a Byzantine Music Concert was held at the Fine Arts Center “Bogaz”, Brussels, where the Byzantine Choir of the Cyprus Church performed traditional Christmas Carols.

Ιt was the turn of the Republic of Cyprus to assume the six-monthly rotating Presidency of the EU from 1st July 2012 to 31st
December 2012. Cyprus worked wisely and consistently to uphold the vision of a better Europe for all its citizens, to strengthen social cohesion and to ensure the consolidation of the European structure.
During this period meetings were held in Brussels and Cyprus at ministerial level, directorship level and in working sessions. At least one meeting at both ministerial and directorship level was held in Cyprus. Among the subjects covered were: Education and Culture, Employment and Social Affairs, Health, Research and Innovation, Environment, External Affairs, Economic & Monetary Affairs, Trade & Agriculture, Competition and many others. Some 3500 meetings took place of which 150 were held in Cyprus and the others in Brussels.
On this momentous occasion, Cyprus undertook to stage across the world, exhibitions and concerts to promote the history and culture of the island. An exhibition at the Center of Fine Arts “Bozar”, Brussels, entitled “Mapping Cyprus 1192-2012”, Crusaders, Traders-Explorers, was held between 22nd June and 23rd September 2012. In Melbourne Australia an exhibition of “Ceramic art of ancient Cyprus” was held from 26th October 2012 to 28th January 2013. The Louvre Museum in Paris showcased “Medieval Cyprus”, exhibiting objects from paleochristian period to the end of the Venetian.
