Δominikos Theotokopoulos famously known as “El Greco” was born in 1541 in Candia, Crete. As a young icon painter
he left his native land c.1567 and travelled to Venice. There he adopted Catholicism and probably became a pupil of Titian. He moved to Rome where his critical attitude to Michaelangelo’s works did not endear him to the local art world. A friendly Cardinal invited him to travel to Spain where he settled in the city of Toledo until his death in 1614.
For two and a half centuries after his death, critics and other contemporary painters gave little credence to his works and thought of him as unlikely to deserve more than a footnote in history. He had failed to win the King’s favour for the manner in which he portrayed theological tenets and received no more commissions from the Toledo Cathedral. In 2004, a previously unknown painting of his “The Baptism of Christ” fetched 789,250 Pounds at Christie’s auction.
El Greco’s patrons were private chapels and smaller religious institutions that allowed him to develop his unique style of painting. It was not until the 19th century that El Greco was recognized as one of the great prophets of modern art. His most famous painting “The Burial of Count Orgas” is now in the Church of St. Tome in Toledo.
The painting of St. Francis in Ecstasy (c.1585-1590) by El Greco can be viewed at the A.G.Leventis Gallery in Lefkosia.
El Greco was buried in Santo Dominigo el Antigao under the large “Adoration of the Shepherds” painted in 1612-14. The Church was destroyed in the 19th century and El Greco’s tomb was lost.
Galileo Galilei was born in 1546 in Pisa, Italy. He entered Pisa University but left without a degree in 1585. In 1592 he entered Padua University where as professor of mathematics he taught until 1610.
In 1609 having heard of the invention of the telescope in the Netherlands, he set about to build his own improved version. In 1610 he discovers Jupiter’s four moons and infers that the earth is not the centre of the universe.
In 1616 he was summoned by Cardinal Bellarmine and told that he must abandon any idea that the sun stood still and the earth revolved around it, and that he should refrain from teaching or defending such a view in writing or by word of mouth. But Galileo could not keep silent and in his book “Dialogue”, published in 1632, he mocked the Papal arguments that adhered to the Ptolemic model of the universe in which heavenly bodies orbit the earth. Galileo was threatened with torture and being burnt alive. Under duress he recanted. He was imprisoned in Rome and later sent to an enforced internal exile to the Tuscan hills where he was able to continue his research.
His methods permanently changed the practice of science for which he has been called “The father of Science”. Andrew Marr, in his book “A History of the World” wrote: “Rough and garrulous Galileo of Pisa, born at the right time to understand the solar system; born in the wrong place to explain how it works”.

Τhe 34c stamp of the Europa issue illustrates a flute known as the “Pithkiavlin” in the Cypriot dialect. Archaeological excavations in Cyprus unearthed clay idols from the 7th and 6th centuries BC playing the flute and other instruments, thus making the flute the most ancient
Cypriot wind instrument. The earliest known flute from the Aurignacian archaeological culture dating back to about 40,000 years was found in Germany. This constitutes evidence of the early beginnings of human culture.
The 51c stamp depicts the lute, known as the “Laouton”in Cyprus. It is the main string instrument which rhythmically accompanies the violin in Cypriot folk songs and dance melodies in which men and women dance separately or jointly.
The “Laouton” has four double strings which are tuned in five courses: Do-Sol-Re-La.

Τhe seasons occur as a result of the yearly revolution of the earth around the sun and the tilt of the earth’s axis relative to the plane of revolution.
The four seasons divide the year into quarters which are marked by changes not only in ecology and weather but also in daylight hours. The seasons in the Northern Hemisphere are opposite to those in the Southern, thus the March equinox in the Northern Hemisphere heralds
the start of Spring and the start of Autumn in the Southern.
Spring, the most glorious of the four seasons, denotes rebirth and growth when nature celebrates the blooming of life in the valleys and in the mountains, when wild flowers burst from their winter slumber, when animals awake from their hibernation and when trees regain their green leaves. It is a time of joy, a time to rejoice in the wonders of nature and a time for Resurrection and hope. In many calendars important events coincide with a variety of cultural and religious observations and customs.
Cyprus in springtime is magical and the countryside the perfect setting for a picnic.
Summer harbours warm weather and longer days, and while autumn is a time of harvesting, winter is a time of storing and conserving as daylight hours grow shorter and shorter with every passing day.

Ιt is said that in the Garden of Gethsemane, on the Mount of Olives, in Jerusalem, that there exists an olive tree from Christ’s time. This is not improbable since it is known that olive trees existed since antiquity and that olive oil was produced in Cyprus as far back as the 13th century BC.
According to Magda Ohenfalsch-Richter (1873-1922) the monasteries of Kykko and Machairas possessed whole forests of olive trees well in excess of the church’s needs. In Cyprus many olive trees grow in the wild and are not grafted. In Greek mythology the wild olive is the tree that drives away evil spirits. The olive trees that grow in the mountains produce smaller olives but are richer in olive oil.
In the Christian world olive oil is used in the sacraments during Baptism and Anointing and many churches still burn
olive oil in the lamps. Palm Sunday is also called “Olive Sunday” and from very early times people considered the olive tree as blessed and the olive oil as holy.
During fasting periods, bread and olives form part of a day’s meal. The “Elioti”, an olive bread, is found in many bakeries
all the year round.
Olive oil is so versatile that it is used in the preparation of food, as a preservative, as a substitute for butter, as an ingredient in the production of soap and as a reliever when a few drops in the ear serve to cure earache. Homer called it “Golden Liquid”.

It is the passion of Hambis, the well known Cypriot engraver from the occupied village of Kontea, to spin the tales of the village, its sorrows, its beauty and its joys just like a weaver. He never drops a stitch and his ink is transformed into a dragon, a sun, a river, a fairy with a knife or a witch with a jasmine flower.
Αn extract from his illustrated folk tale “Spanos and the Forty Dragons” is the theme for the new children’s stamps issued by Cyprus Post. In total faithfulness to the style of the artist, this issue is addressed to children, the inheritors of a tradition who want to see justice prevail, the good to overcome the evil, with Spanos (the people) killing the dragons (the enemy) and thus restoring justice.(so the water of the river flows free). Christmas is the most special time of the year for children. It is the time when Christmas stories are recited by the fireplace or enacted in pantomimes or nativity plays. It is a time of celebrations, of joys and anticipation as children await the arrival of Santa Claus (down the chimney) bearing gifts.
Agios Nikolaos, (Santa Claus) is the most popular of saints because of his association with Christmas. Cyprus participated in a unique exhibition featuring this saint, held in Bari, Italy, in May 2007, by sending on loan a 13th century icon of his from the Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis in Kakopetria.
This year’s Christmas stamps were produced from drawings by children from elementary schools who had participated in a pancyprian competition. It is not the first time that Cyprus Post has undertaken such an initiative so as to encourage children’s interest in stamps and philately.
The images depicted on the stamps reflect the innocence and purity of children’s thoughts and how they view the Christmas festivities.

The marine environment of the Mediterranean supports some 12,000 species of fauna and flora as well as other living
organisms. The sea anemone depicted on the 43c stamp belongs to the Anthozoa class and is a water dwelling predator animal named after a terrestrial flower.
The dividing line between animal and plant is blurred and sea anemones are found to be genetically part plant part animal. They live in isolation in varying marine environments including sand and rock. They feed by catching prey such as fish.

Centuries ago, the Greeks and the Romans understood the magic of this herb. Hippocrates, (c460-377 BC) father of medicine, used it as an antiseptic and today, in Greece, it is used as a palliative for a soar throat. Greek oregano has a deeper more complicated flavour than other varieties.
At wedding ceremonies they made crowns of oregano for young couples to ward off sources that brought sadness.
Oregano became popular after the wars of the 20th century when soldiers returned home having acquired a taste for the pizza herb.

Oregano is a common specie of the Origamun dubium and belongs to the mint family of herbs. It is a perennial herb growing 20-80cm tall with 3-4mm long purple flowers that are produced in erect spikes. Sometimes it is called wild marjoram. The popular Origanum vulgare is found in commercially sold spices.
The herb brings savouriness to many cuisines and has been in use since the dawn of the human race. It is more flavourful when dried than fresh. It is also aromatic and warm and leaves a slightly bitter taste in the mouth. It can be drunk as tea for the treatment of gastrointestinal upsets and for respiratory track problems.
