<text>1st April 2015, marks the 60th Anniversary of the commencement of the EOKA struggle for the liberation of Cyprus and its Union with Greece which finally led to the creation of the Republic of Cyprus. During a period of four years, the people of Cyprus with their youth, who are depicted on this honorary issue, in the forefront, fought with courage, determination and heroism. Neither the superior forces of the Great Britain, nor their hangings nor the inhumane tortures they inflicted on them managed to break their combative spirit, or the ardent determination of a great people.
This issue is meant to honour the struggle of the EOKA fighters who opened the way to freedom and justice.</text>

<text>In order to handle the massive problems caused by the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, with 200.000 Greek Cypriots displaced in their own country, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus set up a “Special Refugee Fund”. To support the Fund and to reduce the financial impact of the refugee
problem, Cyprus Post issued a special refugee stamp, which, under legislation, must accompany every object to be posted.

The 3 mils stamp from the 1971 Definitive Issue, which was overprinted with 10 mils value and the wording “Refugee Fund” in black, was the first refugee stamp.

At the end of 1974 the first official 10 mils refugee stamp was issued, depicting a Cypriot refugee old woman holding her grandchild on her shoulders.
In 1977 a new refugee stamp was in circulation, valued at 10 mils, in a black and white design by the well-known Greek engraver Tassos, depicting a refugee boy from Cyprus, sadly sitting in front of the barbed wires of occupation.

This particular refugee stamp was issued until 1984, when it was re - issued in the same black and white design valued at 1 cent. From 1988 until 2007, the same refugee stamp was issued in grey background. In 2008, it was re-issued at the value of €0,02. Since 2009, the refugee stamp has been re-issued with the same design, but with a different-coloured font. This year the refugee stamp has been re-issued in a grey-blue background.</text>

<text>Οn 20th July 1974 Turkey invaded Cyprus. But instead of restoring the legitimate government as envisaged in Article 3 of the Cyprus
Treaty of Guarantee, it resorted to divide the island with the result that about 200,000 people had to flee from their homes thus becoming
refugees in their own homeland. Also some 1600 people went missing.

Article 3 of the Treaty reads as follows: In the event of a breach of the provisions of the present treaty, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom undertake to consult together with respect to representations or measures to ensure observance of these provisions.

In so far as common or concerted action may not be possible, each of the guaranteeing powers reserves the right to take action with the sole aim of re-establishing the state of affairs created by the present treaty.

It should be noted that in the above paragraph the guaranteeing powers reserve the right to take unilateral action which is not specified and which makes no reference to the use of force. It has, however, a sole aim, that of re-establishing the state of affairs established by the treaty.

Turkey by its action failed to uphold the independence and sovereignty of Cyprus as set out in the treaties it had signed.

The 64c stamp depicts the 16th century icon of the Virgin Mary Glykofilousa (Virgin of the Tenderness or Virgin of the Tender Kiss) from the Church of Agia Zoni in the Orthodox quarter of the old walled city of Famagusta. This was a small 14th or 15th century building in the Byzantine style dedicated to the “Holy Girdle” i.e. Zoni of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church lies in a ruinous state.

This icon which is painted in the style of the Cyprus Renaissance is of exceptional artistry. It is, however, cracked and the paint surface from some areas is missing. When, where and how the damage occurred is a matter of conjecture.

All the repatriated relics are currently on exhibition at the Byzantine Museum of Archbishop Makarios III Foundation in Nicosia.

<text>Τhe Prince of Venice is the Cypriot folk tale of the King of Pafos and his three daughters. It is a tale where love, jealousy, evil intentions, magic, determination, repentance and courage unfold to bring a happy ending to the King’s youngest princess who ends up marrying her Venetian Prince.

The story begins with the King taking a trip abroad. His eldest daughters ask him to bring them beautiful dresses and jewellery but his youngest daughter, after consulting an old woman, asks him to bring her three golden strands of hair from the head of the Prince of Venice. The King manages after some difficulties to obtain the strands of hair from the Prince’s barber and brings them to his daughter. Once again the princess consults the old woman who instructs her how to cast a spell over a period of three days that would bring the Prince to her side. Jealousy compels her elder sisters to sabotage the spell and on the third day the Prince gets seriously hurt and flies back home.

The young princess sets out with great determination to find her Prince, and once again magic plays its part. While resting in the forest she learns how to brew a new potion that would heal her Prince. After preparing the magic potion she resumes her journey and reaches Venice where she learns that
the King’s son is gravely ill and dying.
She disguises herself as a handsome young man and spreads the news that she is a doctor that can cure all ills. Soon the King sends for her and she succeeds to heal the Prince in three days by smearing his body with the potion. She accepts no rewards but asks only for the Prince’s ring which he gladly gives her.

The princess now returns to Cyprus to find that her sisters had repented their actions and with their help she re-enacts her original magic and lures the Prince to her side. The Prince arrives as a golden eagle and draws his sword to kill her for the harm she had brought on him. The princess then shows him the ring he had given her and tells him her story. The Prince forgives her and asks that preparations are made for their marriage. After three days of joyous celebrations the Prince dons his uniform and is transformed into a golden eagle and embracing his wife they fly to his father’s palace where
she is welcomed. Forty days and nights of celebrations ensue.

The King abdicates in favour of his son who then reigns as king with his beautiful wife as his queen.

<text>Costas Montis was born in Ammochostos in 1914. He studied law at the University of Athens but never practiced as a lawyer. He had a varied career as a teacher, poet, journalist, editor and as Director of Tourism from 1960 to 1976 when he retired.

He was a prolific writer having published several works in the Cypriot dialect. He was instrumental in the founding of the first professional theatre in 1942 and wrote many plays including adaptations of the plays of Aristophanes. As a poet he is recognized as Cyprus’ greatest and his long poetic sequence “Letters to Mother” is considered a masterpiece.

In 1964 his book “Closed Doors” was published in Greek. It is a novel narrating the struggle for Cypriot freedom in which the narrator re-lives the curfews, communal fines, informers, tortures and other ills that were endured during the liberation uprising of 1955-1959. It is a record of life as it was in Lefkosia during the emergency period of the 1950s. For those who have read Lawrence Durell’s “Bitter Lemons” it would be good to read Montis’ “Closed Doors” as it depicts the other side of the coin. There is an English translation by S. G. Stavrou and David Roessel.

Costas Montis has had many honours bestowed on him including an honourary doctorate from the University of Athens and an Award for Excellence in Letters and Arts from the Republic of Cyprus. In 1999 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize by the School of Philosophy of the University of Cyprus and the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Costas Montis died in 2004 and will be remembered as one of the founders of modern Cypriot literature.
The pioneers of contemporary Cypriot art of whom Kashalos is one often worked under difficult conditions but managed to lay the foundations for the development of Cypriot art.

Cyprus in the first half of the 20th century was predominantly agricultural and the pioneer painters drew inspiration from rural everyday life of the people as well as old customs and traditions.

Michael Kashalos, born in 1885 in the village of Asha, was a self-taught naïve artist whose paintings portrayed the peasantry and the simple life of the countryside. In his painting “Scything” we see a farmer transporting women reapers with their scythes in his donkey driven cart and meeting another field worker on the road close to the corn fields. It reminds one of past nostalgic years long since forgotten. In another painting he depicts men and women eating “pilafi” after having harvested the corn.

In 1969, Kashalos represented Cyprus with ten paintings at the Bratislava 2nd Triennale of naïve art where he was presented with one of the main awards. This was the decisive moment that established his name and reputation.

Michael Kashalos is considered the father of contemporary Cypriot art and many of his works are in private collections. At the A.G.Leventis Gallery in Lefkosia one can view his painting “The Kalikantzari (Goblins)”.

<text>Αutumn, the season from September’s equinox to December’s solstice, is when the leaves of deciduous trees begin to turn red, yellow and brown before falling and carpeting the ground below. The beauty of autumnal foliage is a sight to behold especially in the western Troodos Mountains around the medieval tselefos bridge.

Autumn is also the primary harvesting season and before the 16th century “Harvest” was the term used to refer to this time of the year. The terms “Herfst” and “Herbst” are still used in Dutch and German respectively. In many cultures harvest festivals are held and in the United States harvested pumpkins play an important part in the Thanksgiving and Halloween festivities.

It is autumn and the hot sweltering summer months give way to the chill winter on the horizon; the skies turn grey, the first rains fall and animals such as bats and hedgehogs begin their search for a place to hibernate. The swallows and the swifts begin their flight south taking them thousands of miles to Africa and a warmer climate and man begins his preparations for the coming of the winter season.

For 10,000 years it has been instrumental in the rise and fall of civilizations and empires and a witness to the interactions of cultures and diverse peoples such as the Greeks, the Persians, the Egyptians, the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Venetians, the Ottomans, as well as the Christian and Islamic cultures.

In Classical antiquity it saw King Agamemnon launch 1,000 ships to the rescue of his beautiful Helen and during the apogee of Phoenician culture and sea-power, saw the settlements of Byblos, Tyre and Sidon, all mentioned in the Egyptian Amarna tablets.

During the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus it was called “Mare Nostrum” and was free of piracy. In the 12th century it saw the expansion of the Kingdom of Italy and one can say it’s been the cradle of civilization.

This sea has been the venue of many sea battles fought between rival empires and was the main area of the battles of World War II between the axis and the allies. Today thousands of refugees and migrants from Africa endeavour to cross to Europe in search of a better
life and many perish in its waters.

The history of the Mediterranean is the history of mankind in this part of the world.
