<text> Apostle Peter is painted on the south respond of the western transverse arch of the western bay while Saint Paul is located opposite on the north respond. The respond was placed as a reinforcement during alterations took place in the thirteenth century, covering the original frescoes of the twelfth century. An important detail is that these may be executed during the same time as the Virgin and the frescoes on the triumphal arch of the apse, but not by the same hand.
What is visible today is the standing figure of Peter, which consists of the subjective thirteenth-century fresco layer on the lower part of his body and the overlying fourteenth-century fresco layer on the upper part. Therefore, the fresco dated to the re-painting programme of the fourteenth-century follows the stylistic tradition of the former fresco layer.
He is depicted facing to the right, blessing with his right hand and holding an open scroll in the left hand. He is dressed in a grey chiton and ocher himation on a red background on the former fresco layer. The overlying fresco has a blue background. The garments of Peter are long enough to touch his feet, which are painted over the bottom frame.
Behind the respond of Saint Peter, there is still visible a small part of a figure dating to the initial twelfth-century painting. The figure bears a crown and thick, brown hair indicating a young man, therefore not Peter. Thus the thirteenth-century layer does not seem to follow the original depiction. The most likely scenario suggests that the painter or painters adopted a novel trend, Peter and Paul placed across the naos and facing each other, which arose in the period between the twelfth and the late thirteenth-century. The first appearance of this scheme is to be found in the church of Saint Nicholas of the Roof at Lagoudera, and in the almost contemporary to Asinou, church of Christ Antiphonetes at Kalogrea.</text>

<text>Saint Nikephoros, is the figure appearing, on the lower zone of the soffit of the northern arch of the central bay.
His insignia, declare him as a bishop, and according to his representation as an elder man, is recognised as Saint Nikephoros, the iconophile patriarch.
Nikephoros, along with Simeon Stilitis and Onouphrios who are depicted on the left, were painted at a later date, in the sixteenth century. Underneath the layer of 1631 and Nikephoros, though, exists the twelfth century layer and through a patch on his lower part it is easy to discern that another saint is depicted. His fine white lines cuff simulate those of saint Niketas on the western side of the same respond. Based on that it can be proposed that this saint was, also, a courtly martyr.
The saint is of particular interest. Nikephoros the iconophile saint was not among the popular ones but Nikephoros is the declared donor of the church. Therefore a reasonable explanation for the depiction of Saint Nikephoros and his late repainting is his connection with the patron of the church. Regarding the saint of the lower layer, the scholars believe that another Saint Nikephoros, not the iconophile bishop, was depicted there. One of them is Saint Nikephoros the martyr, who martyred in Antioch. He was usually portrayed as a courtly martyr with long tunic and chlamys. Thus this Nikephoros may be depicted underneath the homonymous bishop.
Lastly, a successful spatial planning of the frescoes’ selection is Nikephoros and Nicholas, the two saints standing side by side, and their connection to the two important figures of the church, the donor Nikephoros and the ktetor, Nicholas.</text>

Ioulitta is the mother of Saint Kerykos, who is depicted on either side of the arch. Their representation may be explained as the donor’s will to embed locally venerated saints, within the sanctoral iconographic programme of the nave.

Additionally they seem to fall into another theme, promoted by the iconographic programme of the nave. Along with Anna and her daughter, and Elena and her son, they praise the theme of giving birth, and cohesively the unparalleled event of Christ’s birth by the Virgin.</text>

<text>The donor portrait is placed on the southern half of the central blind arch, above the entrance of the Asinou church and is dated to the fourteenth century. It depicts the donor, Magistros Nikephoros Ischyrios, offering the replica of the church to his patron saint, Theotokos. Mary rests Her hand on the church and leads the founder to the enthroned Christ, surrounded by angels. Behind Nikephoros, there is a female figure, his wife or daughter, Gephyra, pictured in a smaller scale, along with her funerary inscription. In front of Mary is Nikephoros’s inscription inquiring about her protection on the day of Judgement.
Undoubtedly there was a donor portrait in the original imagery program of the church. Three features, however, do empower the notion that the subject and depiction style of the current scene is traced back to that initial imagery. Firstly, the transcription of the poem evokes those of the twelfth century. Secondly, Nikephoros’s long-nosed face, hairstyle and his chlamys-like apparel reminisces middle Byzantine courtly costume. And thirdly, the replica of the church which is offered by Nikephoros does not contain the later narthex.
Gephyra is an enigmatic figure, with regard to her name, her petite size or the conflict of the year and indiction in the date of her death. If her diminutive size corresponds to the implication that she is a child, then her mother should have been shown. On the other hand, if Gephyra is Nikephoros’s wife, then this is a Cypriot unicum of a portrait of a married couple depicting the spouse in a smaller scale. Gephyra died on 17th of December eleven o six, too late to have been included in the initial design, but too soon not be included. Thus the painter or painters designed the figure of Gephyra where there was free space but in a smaller size. Gephyra’s name is an unattested name in Byzantine sources of Cyprus. Safira, though, is a name confirmed in the list of villagers in the area of Asinou in the sixteenth century. Therefore Gephyra could be a paraphrase of the name Safira.</text>

Even though dated to the late Byzantine period with the maniakion, the jewelled ring, Saint George wears a short tunic, a distinctive garment of his Komnenan-era representation form. <text>The Mother of God flanked by the Archangels is depicted on the east side of the southern door of the naos. She sits on a rounded throne and holds Jesus Christ as a child in her arms. On the left side of Mary, there is Archangel Michael and Archangel Gabriel is shown on her right side.
Strange enough is the elongation of the figures in the scene, as if the painter draw it on purpose to cover a standing figure on the original fresco layer.
The scene as a whole within the frame of the panel resembles to that of an icon specifically painted for veneration, a proskynetarion. Its position was not chosen by chance as it is located adjacently to the icons of Christ the Merciful and Mary. Regarding the duplication of the depiction of Mary here and on the Paraklesis icon, the proskynetarion of the enthroned Mary functions as the depiction of the patron saint of the church and not as the Intercessor between the humankind and the Eleemon.
Comparing the throne of Mary and the throne of Christ on the patronal scene on the lunette just above it is profound that the enthroned Mary is an inspiration of the fourteenth century.
Special mention must be given to the scarcity of the depiction of enthroned Mary before the late twelfth century. As from the second half of the twelfth century, the presence of these mural icons became mainstream but again they were not placed with a purpose. Only at Lagoudera and Asinou they were located strategically, along with archangels.</text>
